With less than one week from the conclusion of this year’s Daily Breeze sports ball drive on Friday, Dec. 18, the time is running out to make a contribution and make an especially tough holiday season brighter for a young child in need.
Since 1999, the Daily Breeze ball drive has delivered more than 23,000 sports balls for kids at the Boys & Girls Club of the L.A. Harbor. Last year, we succeeded in contributing our biggest haul yet, roughly 3,000 sports balls. This year so far we have collected about one-third of that. But we have all the confidence that readers like you will pull us through.
We would like to offer a special thank you to Kole Imports and Palos Verdes Peninsula resident Scott Chernoff for their generosity, as well as ball drive ambassadors Michael Correa, Andy Beal and Angela Springer. They’ve all pitched in big time indeed — and they urged others in the community to join them, too.
The ball drive’s organizers offer their sincere thanks — as well as to all the others who have contributed even one sports ball to this year’s drive.
The coronavirus pandemic has made 2020 a challenging year for everyone, especially children who thrive when they are together and outdoors. Distance learning and social distancing has kept kids out of school and indoors on their computers while many families are struggling financially.
The vast majority of children served at the Boys & Girls Club of the L.A. Harbor come from families with low incomes, many of them essential workers who have been hit especially hard by the pandemic. That’s why the children need our support now more than ever.
A sports ball is such a great gift on so many levels. It promotes physical activity, coordination and social interaction. Help make this year’s ball drive a success by making a contribution today. You can do so easily by visiting a Big 5 Sporting Goods location and making a purchase at 25% off or drop off a new sports ball at any number of the locations listed below.
You can also have balls sent directly to the Boys and Girls Club of L.A. Harbor’s San Pedro location at 1200 S. Cabrillo Ave.
This year’s Daily Breeze ball drive would not be a success without the efforts of our partners such as Big 5 Sporting Goods, UNIFY Financial Credit Union and First Bank.
“A heartfelt thank you to our customers and third-party donors for participating in this year’s Daily Breeze Ball Drive,” said Rick Gridley, Director of Public Affairs at Big 5. “The level of giving this holiday season has been remarkable and we are truly grateful for your support. Every ball donated counts for these kids and it’s not too late to donate at a drop off location near you”.
Natasha Ranchigoda, VP of Marketing Partnerships for UNIFY, said the bank supports the ball drive for the children.
“It’s been a heck of a year for all of us on so many levels,” Ranchigoda said. “Children most of all, have had to adapt to many changes. While we can’t control a lot of things right now, UNIFY felt more than ever, we can control sharing the holiday spirit with our youth. This annual ball drive allows us to spread smiles and support our South Bay community. We hope and encourage all to join in.”
