The return of college basketball season means the return of Bracketology projections. And with the hot starts by a number of area teams, early projections look quite favorable for multiple local programs.
In Joe Lunardi’s most recent update on ESPN, five local teams appeared in his mock field, including the Baylor Bears, who grabbed one of the four elusive No. 1 seeds. Just like in the AP poll, though, the Bears are looking up at Gonzaga as the No. 1 overall school, as the Bulldogs grabbed the No. 1 overall seed in Lunardi’s projection.
Baylor was far from the only Big 12 team to be shown respect in Lunardi’s projection. In fact, five of the 16 schools to receive a top-four seed were Big 12 teams: Baylor had a No. 1 seed, West Virginia and Kansas each got a nod for a No. 2 seed, Texas held a No. 3 seed and Texas Tech earned a No. 4 seed.
A local school that just missed out on being included: unbeaten SMU. The Mustangs earned the not-so-enviable honor of being the first team left out of the field.
Here’s a full accounting of local schools in Tuesday’s projected field.
Local teams in the field
Baylor: No. 1 seed (vs. winner of play-in matchup between automatic qualifiers Texas Southern and Norfolk State)
Texas: No. 3 seed (vs. automatic qualifier Wright State)
Texas Tech: No. 4 seed (vs. automatic qualifier Georgia State)
Oklahoma: No. 8 seed (vs. Kentucky)
Stephen F. Austin: No. 15 seed (vs. Iowa)
Other teams of note:
SMU: Appeared as First Team Out, finishing just behind the Last Four Teams In: NC State, Xavier, Syracuse and Memphis.
