A fifth victim has died in Tuesday’s horrific car attack in Germany, according to reports.
Authorities said the victims include a 9-week-old girl and her father, as the shocked European nation continues to search for answers.
Dozens of candles have now sprouted up at the scene of the deadly assault in the southwestern German city of Trier — while police continue trying to determine the 51-year-old driver’s motive, the Independent reported Wednesday.
Witnesses said the driver, a local man identified only as Bernd W., was behind the wheel of a Land Rover when he plowed into the crowd, killing the baby girl, her 45-year-old father and three women between the ages of 25 and 73.
Authorities said the driver was drunk and said there are indications to “suggest that psychiatric problems possibly played a role,” the BBC said.
Hundreds gathered at the scene of the carnage Wednesday for the first official ceremony to mourn the victims, as the city remains in shock.
“It is a sad day,” Malu Dreyer, state premier of Rhineland-Palatinate, told the crowd, according to Deutsche Welle. “My voice is failing me, thinking about the mother who has lost her child and her husband.”
“Never again will she hear their laughter, their voices,” Dreyer said. “She will be burdened by the consequences of these four deadly minutes for the rest of her life.”
Police said the driver has begun to speak to investigators, but they have not determined what motivated him to mow down his victims.
