Five cyclists have died and four others were injured following a collision involving a truck near Las Vegas, according to police in Nevada.
The incident happened on US Highway 95 when the vehicle allegedly hit a car assigned to follow a group of about 20 cyclists, said state department of transportation spokesman Tony Illia.
The five victims were pronounced dead at the scene, south of Boulder City, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Travis Smaka added.
Of the four riders who were injured, one in a critical condition was flown to hospital in a helicopter.
The group was reportedly taking part an informal ride to celebrate one of the cyclists' retirement.
Authorities said the truck driver remained at the scene as inspections were carried out on the vehicle's brakes, tyres and overall condition following the crash at 9.40am on Thursday.
Video footage from the site showed a white truck on the side of the highway with damage to its front.
Clay Weeks, a worker at the Pro Cyclery bike shop, knew many of the cyclists involved in the crash.
He was quoted by USA Today as saying: "They were on a retirement ride for one of the community cyclists.
"We've talked to a couple of people who were on the ride. Obviously everybody is super upset and distraught.
"It's pretty horrific that something like this would happen. There's really no words."
