OROVILLE — Butte County Public Health updated its COVID-19 dashboard on Monday for the first time since Dec. 22, factoring in the long holiday weekend, and reported 476 new cases in addition to five more deaths due to the virus.

The death toll reached 88 in Butte County with the five additional deaths. Four of the individuals were 75 years of age or older, and one was between 65 and 74 years old. December has been the deadliest month of the pandemic for Butte County, with 24 individuals losing their lives between Dec. 2 and 22, including four on Dec. 13, the single most of any day over the previous nine months.

There are an additional six “probable” deaths reported in a graphic on the Butte County Public Health dashboard, but those have yet to be confirmed pending the receipt of a death certificate. A note at the bottom of the graphic reads, “All deaths counted as COVID-19 deaths are reviewed to confirm that COVID-19 is listed as a cause of death on the death certificate,” and notes that a death certificate may take days or weeks to be received.

The 476 new cases were out of 4,674 total viral tests taken over the same time period, which indicated a 10.36% positivity rate over the previous seven days. With the addition of 476 cases, Butte County saw a total of 578 new cases during the week of Dec. 22-28. That marked a decrease from each of the last two weeks — 899 new cases for the week of Dec. 15-21; and 893 cases for the week of Dec. 8-14.

The number of active cases, 655, dropped on Monday from 919 as of Butte County Public Health’s last update on Dec. 22. Relative to the start of the month, however, that number is still more than 300 cases higher.

Butte County Public Health has also begun reporting “probable” cases in addition to confirmed cases, due to an increase in rapid antigen tests, which detects proteins on the surface of the virus, whereas polymerase chain reaction tests detect viral genetic material. According to Butte County Public Health, the California Department of Public Health only considers PCR tests as confirmed cases for the purposes of state metrics and dashboards.

Between Dec. 23-27, 103 new probable cases were reported. There have been 842 total probable cases dating back to the beginning of September, according to the Butte County Public Health dashboard.

Hospitals

Of the 655 active cases, 43 county residents are hospitalized. According to state hospital data, as of Sunday 84 people, both residents and non-residents, were hospitalized across the county’s three primary hospitals — Enloe Medical Center, Oroville Hospital and Orchard Hospital. That number decreased from 100 one day prior, which stands as the most COVID-19 positive patients hospitalized in the county at any one time.

Additionally, 17 positive patients are hospitalized in intensive care units. Three ICU beds remain available in the county.

Jail outbreak

A recent outbreak at the Butte County Jail reached more than 75 cases between inmates and staff in the past week, however, as of its latest report Monday, that number was reduced to 19 active cases among in-custody inmates and five among staff members. Another 38 tests among inmates are pending.

To date, 1,097 inmate tests have been taken, with 717 returning negative and 251 positive cases now considered recovered.

Twenty-two staff members have tested positive to date and 17 have recovered and returned to work. A total of 319 tests among staff have been taken.
