Texas A&M is recruiting the defensive line position at an elite level under Jimbo Fisher and his staff - five-star defensive end Shemar Turner the latest to announce his pledge to the Aggies on Saturday afternoon.
Turner follows the likes of DeMarvin Leal two years ago and McKinnley Jackson last cycle as no-brainer talents who will all be among the best in the trenches in the SEC. The DeSoto (Texas) High standout chose to play his college football in College Station over the likes of Texas, Alabama, LSU and Georgia.
“They’re getting a physical kid and his motor never stops,” DeSoto head coach Claude Mathis told 247Sports. “He’s always trying to destroy you. But he’s a smart kid. This is what they really don’t know, he is a smart, smart football player. He knows a lot of Xs and Ox. This kid has a big-time IQ when it comes to football.”
Jimbo Fisher will boast these three talents at the same next fall, part of an uber-talented group that could also still include Bobby Brown, Micheal Clemons and Tyree Johnson along with several more promising young players in Isaiah Raikes, Derick Hunter, Dallas Walker IV, Donell Harris and Fadil Diggs among others. However Brown and Clemons are more than likely gone putting more responsibility on Turner right away.
He should be up for it.
The 6-foot-3 1/2, 282-pound Turner is cut in the same mold as Leal, a big-bodied yet versatile player at the point of attack who can set the edge or provide a pass rush presence with his quickness at any spot he puts his hand in the dirt at. He is indeed an instant-impact talent.
“They’re getting a heck of a player,” Mathis reiterated. “They’re adding to the great tradition they have going there right now.
“I think it’s a program going in the right direction. I think it’s a program he totally turned around. If you go back and do the research on Coach Fisher, you notice he’s always had great defensive lines and great defenses.”
With that, Fisher and his staff have focused on defensive line in this 2021 cycle. Turner is the jewel, but four-star Marcus Burris is another big, athletic body type and Jahzion Harris will be an explosive player on the edge to push Harris and Diggs in their development. Albert Regis will be that athletic plugger in the middle. Of course you still have Top247 defensive end Tunmise Adeleye in play, another Top50 prospect like Turner who heads into a weekend visit to Florida a heavy lean to Texas A&M. The 247Sports Crystal Ball is all Aggies for Top247 defensive end Elijah Jeudy.
Texas A&M has been particularly stout against the run this year ranking No. 9 nationally in that category. I think they’ll be suffocating against both the run and pass next fall as their defensive front continues to develop and also add more competition with the likes of Turner soon joining the roster.
With Turner in the boat Texas A&M continues to track for a third-straight Top10 class checking in at No. 11 in the 247Sports Composite standings.
