Michigan Runs Past Ball State - BallStateSports.com

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Still a work in progress with three rotation players out, the Ball State men's basketball team dropped an 84-65 game at Michigan Wednesday night. The Cards, now 0-2 on the young season, were led by K.J. Walton with 20 points and seven rebounds.

Luke Bumbalough added 13 points and  Ishmael El-Amin chipped in 10 with a team-best four assists. Michigan (3-0) got a game-high 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting from Isaiah Livers.

The Cardinals had strong stretches of play in the game, most notably a 19-6 run to close the first half. Ball State was within 40-35 early in the second half.

TURNING POINT: With Ball State trailing just 40-35 early in the second half, Michigan went on a 13-4 run to make it a 53-39 game. The Michigan lead grew incrementally and was 23 at the 9:27 mark. Michigan shot 57 percent in the second half with Livers (12 points) leading a balanced attack after halftime. Five different players scored at least five points for Michigan in the second half.

HEAR IT FROM THE COACH: "Games like this are great for us. It exposes the things you don't do well," head coach James Whitford said. "Our non-conference schedule is really hard. We had Northern Kentucky who made back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, Michigan and UIC who is now 3-0. Our schedule will definitely get us ready. We just need to get ourselves ready. The good news for us is these games make you better. Inch by inch, we need to get better every day."

BIG RUN TO CLOSE THE HALF: Ball State hit the halftime locker room on a roll, ripping off a 19-6 run. Trailing 34-14 with 5:39 left in the first half, Ball State battled back with an 10-0 run that featured four made free throws and made 3-pointers by Zach Gunn and Jalen Windham. BSU closed the half with buckets from El-Amin and Walton to cut the lead to 40-33 at halftime.

A COUPLE OF FIRSTS: Kani Acree and Blake Huggins started the game, the first career start for each player. Acree, who played 26 minutes in the opener last week, played 17 minutes. Huggins saw 10 minutes of action, battling through foul trouble. Brachen Hazen started the second half along with game starters Walton, El-Amin, Bumbalough and Acree.

UP NEXT: Hoops returns to Worthen this weekend. The Cards host UIC Saturday at 2 p.m. Ball State won 67-48 at UIC last year. Saturday's game will be streamed on ESPN3 and can be heard on 96.7 and 104.9 FM.
