Who ares the Ball State Cardinals?

• Ball State (0-1) comes to Ann Arbor after a 74-73 season-opening loss to Northern Kentucky. Despite a career-best 28 points and 11 rebounds by sixth-year guard K.J. Walton and two last second attempts for the win, NKU's three-pointer with 22 seconds left was the difference for the Norse.
• Ball State finished 18-13 in 2019-20, tied with Northern Illinois for the MAC West Division title (11-7) before the season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.
• After entering the transfer portal in the offseason, senior Ishmael Al-Emin decided to return to Ball State. Last season, he led the Cardinals in three-point shooting (39.3 percent, 77 three-pointers) and ranked second in scoring (13.8), assists (72, 2.3 apg) and steals (31, 1.0 spg).
• Redshirt sophomore Jarron "Boogie" Coleman, who averaged 9.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and a team-best 2.9 assists last season, looks to pick up where he left off after being named the MAC Freshman of the Year and moving into the starting point role.
• Redshirt junior Zach Gunn returns after two ankle surgeries in 2019-20. For his career, 75 percent of his offensive shots are from long range. The Cardinals also welcome transfer and redshirt senior Reggie Jones, who spent two seasons at Western Michigan and one at Tulsa.
• Last season, nearly 50 percent of Ball State's offense (48.0 percent) was produced from long range. The Cardinals made 283 three-pointers (9.1 per game) and shot 33.6 percent, averaging 27.2 attempts per game from deep.

The Series with Ball State

• Michigan is 9-1 in the all-time series against Ball State.
• The Wolverines and Cardinals are meeting for the first time in 12 years. U-M dropped a 75-64 decision to Ball State at Crisler on Nov. 16, 1998.
• In that game after scoring just 23 points in the first half, the Wolverines trailed by 12 at halftime. Despite a 41-point second half, Michigan could not come back and suffered its first loss in the series. Ball State guard Duane Clemons scored 23 points, while Patrick Johnson has 14. U-M was led by Louis Bullock's 19 and Robbie Reid's 16. The Cardinals outshot the Wolverines, 34-14, on free-throw attempts.
• Overall, U-M is 7-1 in Ann Arbor and 2-0 in Muncie, Ind.

Last Time on the Hardwood

• Michigan used a second-half rally -- led by the freshman duo of Hunter Dickinson and Terrance Williams II -- to defeat Oakland, 81-71, in overtime on Sunday (Nov. 29). Dickinson scored all 19 of his points in the second half and OT and was part of 26 of U-M's final 35 points. Williams had seven points, four rebounds and two assists in 14 key minutes off the bench. Isaiah Livers knocked down five 3-pointers as he posted 22 points -- his fifth career 20-plus point game.

What You Need to Know

• Michigan has continued to live its "mini-bubble" life and are tested for the coronavirus six days a week. Almost all the Wolverines academic courses are attended remotely.
• Due to the pandemic, the Wolverines are playing a reduced schedule of 25 regular season games -- five non-conference and 20 Big Ten games. All five non-conference games will be played in Ann Arbor.
• The Wolverines do not make their first road trip until a Christmas Day game at Nebraska. U-M also will usher in 2021 with a New Year's Eve game at Maryland.
• On March 4, U-M head coach Juwan Howard approached Austin Davis before practice and told him a spot for him for a fifth year in 2020-21 was available if he wanted it. Davis was so excited he dropped the basketball and bear-hugged Howard. This preseason, Davis was named one of two captains, along with Isaiah Livers.
• Davis started his first collegiate game against Bowling Green (Nov. 25) in the season opener. Prior to that nod, he had played 65 games off the bench.
• Davis continues his love of the outdoors and is an avid hunter and fisherman. Each year, he makes his own jerky and took all the U-M big men on a fishing trip on his grandfather's land in Onsted, Mich.
Isaiah Livers and Franz Wagner explored the NBA Draft, but they elected to return.
Franz Wagner is the younger brother of former All-Big Ten Wolverine Moritz Wagner, who led U-M to the 2018 Final Four, was a first round NBA Draft pick (Los Angeles Lakers) and currently is playing with the Washington Wizards.
Mike Smith, a native of Burr Ridge, Ill., continues to be mentored by former Chicago Bulls G/F Jimmy Butler, now a member of the Miami Heat.
Jace Howard is the son of head coach Juwan Howard. Coach Howard's other son, Jett, is a top-50 recruit in the Class of 2022 and currently plays at IMG Academy.
• Two of Michigan's four freshmen are lefties -- Hunter Dickinson and Zeb Jackson. In all, U-M has three lefty shooters on the roster with Luke Wilson.

Just a Little Bit More

• Michigan is averaging 88.5 points per game after scoring 80-plus points in its first two games this season.
• The Wolverines are shooting 50.4 percent (64-for-123) from the field.
• U-M has posted back-to-back games of 40-plus rebounds and is averaging 44.5 per game -- Bowling Green (44) and Oakland (45).
• In its first two games, Michigan has had 20-plus assists -- 23 vs. Bowling Green and 24 versus Oakland (24). U-M had four total all of last season, and in 2018-19, U-M had five, including the last time the Wolverines had two straight -- vs. Iowa (24) and Minnesota (21) in the 2019 Big Ten Tournament.
• The Maize and Blue have three double-figure scorers -- Isaiah Livers (19.5), Hunter Dickinson (15.0) and Chaundee Brown Jr. (12.0).
