KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Kearney Catholic boys basketball won the Amherst Holiday Tournament with Brett Mahony scoring his 1,000th career in the process.

In 11 games, Mahony is filling up the hoop, averaging 20.0 points per game.

“He’s so tough inside,” Kearney Catholic boys basketball coach Bob Langan. “He gets the heck beaten out of him inside about every night. It’s kind of amazing some nights that he still does what he does.”

Given his offensive production, Mahony scored his 1,000th career point as only a junior.

“I just want to thank all the people around me, like reach my goals,” Mahony said. “My teammates, my family, my coaches, I mean just everyone. It was a fun time, it was great.”

Hung up outside the Stars gym stand the school’s records, with one name providing a goal for Mahony.

“My two goals were to break Brady Holtmeier’s scoring record and then to break also his rebounding record,” he said.

The rate he is going, Mahony is not far off from either record and Coach Langan knows he has the consistency to do it.

“It’s just nice to have that guy every night to know what to expect and to know what you’re going to get,” Langan said.

At 9-2, the Stars are ratted second in Class C-1 and this year seem poised to make another run to Lincoln.

“We’ve obviously played together for most of us three years now and so we have a pretty good bond with each other so I think it’s just clicking,” Mahony said.

The State Tournament is still two months away but Stars fans can expect to help Kearney Catholic get back there, one shot and one rebound at a time.
