COLUMBIA, Missouri - For the second night in a row LSU and No. 17 Missouri needed five sets to settle the match and for the second night in a row it was Missouri who left the Hearnes Center victorious. LSU falls to 3-5 while Missouri moves to 8-2.
LSU will be off next week before travelling to Gainesville for two matches at Florida, February 10-11.
Missouri opened the night with a 25-19 first set victory, but LSU responded well, winning the sets two and three, 25-23 and 25-18. Missouri took the fourth, 25-19, to force a deciding set.
Just like Friday's fifth set, Missouri started on a 5-0 run, proving too much for LSU to overcome as Missouri ended up taking the final set, 15-10.
"I thought we took another step up from yesterday and this is a young group," said head coach Fran Flory. "We haven't been here before and we have to understand we belong. I thought we did through about three and a half sets and then we started questioning. As a staff we have to get them in the gym and get them a little more confident and a little bit more sure of what they're doing.
"We played as hard as we could physically play and we gave everything we could give. We had great depth. Every single person on this roster contributed. Today was a great testimony to our depth."
Missouri's Kylie Deberg had a match-high 23 kills to go with 11 digs and Anna Dixon had 11 kills of her own.
LSU's 15 service errors compared to Missouri's 3 ended up being a big factor in the match. LSU did outhit Missouri though, .215-.211
Despite the loss, LSU got contributions from all over the court with three Tigers finishing with double-doubles.
In just her second match with LSU after transferring from Northwestern State, outside hitter Hannah Brister made her presence known, finishing with 21 kills, hitting .432 and compiling 13 digs. Freshman outside hitter Paige Flickinger recorded her fourth double-double in just her eighth match in college with 14 kills and 12 digs.
"What a great performance by our outsides," said Flory. "Hannah Brister was amazing and Paige Flickinger was outstanding. It's the first time in a long time that the Tigers have two outsides that can terminate."
Sophomore Karli Rose, who had a double-double last night like Flickinger, had 47 assists and 13 digs.
Senior Taylor Bannister had 17 kills and was one dig shy of having her own double-double. Sophomore Allee Morris paced the match with five blocks at the net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
- Taylor Bannister tallied her first kill of the game to put the Tigers in the lead 2-1 early in the first set. Missouri took a 7-3 lead over the Tigers, but Bannister tried to shift momentum with another kill.
- Hannah Brister added her first ace of her LSU career to tried and cut into the Missouri lead, 9-13 and Emmaline Walters tallied her first ace of the night to move within three of tying the set, 10-13.
- Kills by Bannister and Alia Williams along with an ace from Bannister evened the set at 15.
- Missouri responded and took a 20-17 lead over the Tigers as LSU took its first timeout.
- Bannister responded out of the timeout with a kill to close the gap to two points, 18-20 to try and put the Tigers back late in the set. But Missouri took the momentum back and increased their lead, 23-19 over the Tigers and forced their last timeout.
- Although the Tigers tried to answer late, they fell short dropping the first set, 25-19, to Missouri.
Set 2
- The Tigers got out to the early lead with kills from Bannister and Paige Flickinger to put the Tigers on top of Missouri 3-1.
- Missouri answered and gained momentum to take the lead 7-4 and forced LSU to take a timeout. Allee Morris tallied a kill to end the Missouri run and inch closer to Missouri.
- Williams added a kill to put the Tigers within one, 8-7, and the Tigers capitalized on a Missouri error to tie it at 8.
- Missouri took the lead back but Flickinger responded with a kill to cut into the score, 14-11.
- Bannister tallied another ace to put the Tigers within one of Missouri. An error from Missouri tied it at 15 as it took a timeout.
- The two teams battled back and forth to eventually even the score at 22 but LSU pulled ahead 24-23 as Missouri took a timeout. An attacking error by Missouri ended the set and evened the match.
Set 3
- Brister tallied a kill early on and then immediately recorded an ace to give LSU an early 2-1 edge.
- Karlie Rose added her first kill of the night to put the Tigers within one, 6-5.
- Brister added a kill to put the Tigers on top, 10-9 . Williams later tallied an ace to increase the lead by two, 14-12. Bannister put another kill on the board, 15-12, and forced Missouri to use a timeout.
- A kill by Brister gave LSU an 19-18 lead and rocketed LSU to a 7-0 run to close the set and take a 2-1 match advantage.
- Brister finished the set with nine kills.
Set 4
- The Tigers got the early lead over Missouri, 5-3 behind a kill from Flickinger and Missouri errors.
- Missouri took the lead, but a kill from Brister quickly evened the score at 8. LSU and Missouri battled back and forth, but Missouri took the momentum, 15-13, halfway through the fourth. Missouri added a 4-0 scoring run to take the 17-13 lead and forced LSU to take their first timeout.
- Morris came up with a huge block to keep Missouri off the board and try to cut into the lead, 18-15.
- Despite fighting back late in the set LSU fell just short losing the set, 25-19, and forcing a fifth set for the second straight night..
Set 5
- LSU fell behind early in the fifth set, 5-0, and took its first timeout. Following the timeout, Bannister added a kill to put the first Tigers on the board.
- Flickinger tallied a kill to try and keep the Tigers in the set, 8-3. Bannister added two back-to-back aces to put them within three of Missouri, 9-6.
- Missouri increased their lead, 13-9, over the Tigers. Although LSU fought hard late in the fifth, Missouri proved too much and closed out the match, 15-10.
