CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns looked like they were heading for a crucial touchdown late in the second quarter vs. the Chiefs on Sunday. But just as Rashard Higgins was about to get into the end zone, Chiefs safety Daniel Sorensen knocked the ball out of his hands, and it went out of the end zone for a touchback to Kansas City.
So if the Chiefs didn’t recover the ball, why does the ball go to their offense? Here’s what the NFL rulebook says about this situation:
When a fumble goes out of bounds in the end zone, the following shall apply:
1. If a ball is fumbled in the field of play, and goes forward into the opponent’s end zone and over the end line or sideline, a touchback is awarded to the defensive team; or
2. If a ball is fumbled in a team’s own end zone or in the field of play and goes out of bounds in the end zone, it is a safety, if that team provided the impetus that sent the ball into the end zone (See 11-5-1 for exception for momentum). If the impetus was provided by the opponent, it is a touchback.
Also of note on the play is that Sorensen clearly hits Higgins in the helmet, which led to the ball coming loose. According to the NFL rules, it should have been a penalty. However, it wasn’t called on the field and that type of hit is not reviewable.
As a result, Kansas City got the ball back and kicked a field goal late in the half to take a 19-3 lead into halftime.
