Ball State Sneaks Out 1-0 Win to Split Series with Lancers - Longwood Athletics

MUNCIE, Ind. – Rachel Pereira scored the lone goal of the game late in the third quarter as Ball State rebounded from a game one loss to beat Longwood field hockey 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex. 
 
The Lancers (3-4, 2-4) held the edge in shots, 8-5 and shots on goal, 5-3. However, the Cardinals were able to fend off the Longwood, ending the Lancers' 13-game goal scoring streak.
 
"Obviously we are very disappointed with the result of the game," said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. "We thought we deserved more from it, and we are certainly the team that should have won that game but with some things out of our control we didn't. We are disappointed as a group, but we will move on and try to bounce back."
 
Ball State goalkeeper Wietske Overdijkink made four saves for the Cardinals (3-5, 3-3), as she recorded her first shutout of 2021. Madison Nuckols, making her fourth-consecutive start for the Lancers, made a save for Longwood, as junior Rio Weber also recorded a defensive save.
 
In total, the Lancer backline led by Kolbey Donahue, Rio Weber, Caroline Verhappen, limited Ball State to just five total shots one game after holding the Cardinals to just one shot in the series opener on Friday. On offense, Donahue again led Longwood in shots with four, including two on goal. Five different Lancers recorded shots, including five total on goal, while holding a 6-3 edge in penalty corners as Longwood pressured the Ball State defense for the second-consecutive game.  
 
However, the Cardinals were able to hold off the Longwood attack long enough to snap their two game losing streak against the Lancers and earn their third-consecutive series split to start 2021.
 
Up next for Longwood is a trip to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for a back-to-back set with Central Michigan, starting with game one on Friday, April 2 at 12 p.m.
