BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon State volleyball team earned a five set victory over California on Friday afternoon in Haas Pavilion.
Cal took the opening set 25-22, but Oregon State responded with a dominating 25-13 set two win and then a third set win by 25-19. The Bears took the fourth set 25-20 before OSU closed the match out in set five, 16-14.
In a first set of runs, it was California taking the early 5-2 lead. Oregon State responded with a 3-0 run of its own to knot the game at 5-5. The Bears matched the Beavers run with a 3-0 run before OSU regained the lead at 11-9 after a 6-1 run.
Cal jumped in front off a 6-1 run to take a 15-12 lead and force Oregon State to call its first timeout.
The Golden Bears opened its lead up to five, 20-15, that was followed by a 4-1 Beaver run which included back-to-back kills from Aliyah McDonald and Lindsey Schell that forced a Cal timeout. As California led 21-19 late, the teams traded the next six points before Cal secured the 25-22 set win.
From the get go, Oregon State controlled set two in dominating fashion with an attacking percentage of .324 in the set. The Beavers took an early 4-1 lead after Anastasija Svetnik registered back-to-back kills to open the frame.
A 4-0 run for OSU sparked by an Izzi Szulczewski kill led to the team opening its lead to 12-7 and forcing Cal to call a timeout. The Beavers picked right back up out of the timeout, going on an 8-2 run to extend its lead to 11 and make the Bears use their second timeout.
McDonald recorded her fourth kill of the match to give OSU set point before Schell got the set point kill, tying the match at one set apiece with the Beaver 25-13 set two victory.
Unfazed by an early 6-0 deficit, the Beavers battled back to draw within two of Cal at 9-7. OSU kept within striking distance of the Bears before eventually tying the game at 15 all and then taking its first lead of the set at 16-15 off a Mychael Vernon ace.
Oregon State pulled ahead 23-18 behind a 7-2 run, forcing Cal to call its final timeout of the set. Schell gave the Beavers set point with a kill and Vernon captured the 25-19 set win for OSU with a kill after the Bears battled off the first set point.
Cal took a 3-0 lead to start the fourth set but OSU responded with a 4-1 run to tie the set at four all with a kill from Svetnik. The two teams traded points as Vernon and Svetnik put the Beavers up 13-11 with a block, forcing Cal to call its first timeout.
Oregon State took the first two points out of the timeout, taking a 15-11 lead. However, the Bears went on a 4-0 run to even the game up and make OSU call a timeout. A 3-1 Beaver run put OSU back out in front 18-16 late in set four.
The Bears closed the set on a 9-2 run to tie the match at two sets apiece with the 25-20 fourth set win.
In a tightly contested deciding fifth set, it was Oregon State out in front quickly at 4-1 to force Cal to burn its first timeout. The Bears used a 3-0 run out of the timeout to tie the set at 4-4.
After being tied six all, McDonald sparked a 4-0 OSU run and give them a 10-6 advantage. Cal drew within one, 10-9, behind a 3-0 run which forced Oregon State to call its first timeout.
The Bears knotted the game at 13-13, causing a Beaver timeout. Oregon State closed the set on a 3-1 run for the 16-14 victory and 3-2 match win.
Match Notes:
- Freshman Mychael Vernon recorded her third career double-double with a game-high 18 kills and 15 digs. She also registered four blocks and two service aces.
- Freshman Izzi Szulczewski posted her seventh double-double with a game and career-high 46 assists and 15 digs.
- Senior Grace Massey led the Beavers with 17 digs and tallied eight assists.
- Junior Lindsey Schell had a season-best 11 kills, along with four digs and two blocks.
- Freshmen Aliyah McDonald and Anastasija Svetnik each had 10 kills on the afternoon. McDonald added six blocks and Svetnik had five. Svetnik led the Beavers with an individual game-high .667 hitting percentage.
- Freshmen Ellie Turner (13) and Kateryna Tkachenko (10) each had double-digit digs.
- Oregon State our performed Cal in kills (58-46), attacking percentage (.190-.103), assists (56-42), digs (82-71), and blocks (12-6).
