Fire burns five acres of Ballona Wetlands - Santa Monica Daily Press

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

A brush fire in the Ballona Wetlands burned five acres on Tuesday but firefighters were able to prevent any structure damage or injuries.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, 54 firefighters worked on the blaze and while heavy brush made access to the area difficult, they were able to bring it under control in about two hours.

According to LAFD, firefighters first responded at about 3:30 and a lack of wind kept the spread to a minimum.

The area houses the ecological reserve and the Playa Del Rey oil field storage facility but no structures were damaged and the Los Angeles County Fire Department provided one water-dropping helicopter and two hand crews to assist with the operation.

The storage facility is the subject of community protest in the area with local officials citing safety concerns as reasons for SoCalGas to shutter operations there.

The area lies just below a residential neighborhood and across the street from the Playa Vista community. A sizable homeless RV encampment also borders the zone.

No cause was available at press time.
