Five new COVID cases here, 1,761 statewide - Evanston Now

Evanston health officials reported six new COVID-19 cases in the city today, up from five yesterday. The city’s coronavirus death toll has remained unchanged for over three-and-a-half weeks at 114.

Statewide there were 1,761 new cases, compared to 2,250 yesterday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health today reported that 49,192 people were vaccinated yesterday. The seven day average is up from a week ago.

A total of 5.58 million vaccine doses had been administered as of yesterday, about 82% of the total 6.7 million doses distributed to the state by the federal government. The IDPH says 16.34% of the state’s population is now fully vaccinated.

Cook County, including Chicago, is only in the middle of the pack in the state in the percentage of residents vaccinated so far.

Reported COVID-19 deaths in Illinois declined sharply yesterday, but the seven day average is up slightly from a week ago.

The IDPH reported tests of 602 Evanston residents today, compared to 609 yesterday. The IDPH found five positive cases here for a daily positive rate of 0.8%. The seven-day positive rate here is more than double what it was a week ago.

The state now says Evanston has had a total of 4,338 cases. The city’s tally is 4,134.

As of last night, 1,352 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 280 patients were in the ICU and 128 of those were on ventilators.

The IDPH today said that because these hospitalization metrics continue to trend upward, the state has not yet met the conditions to move to the Bridge Phase. However, the state is close to meeting the vaccination threshold: 69 percent of seniors 65 and older have now been vaccinated. Health officials continue to urge all residents to mask up, socially distance and wash hands frequently to reduce transmission and bring the metrics back in line to transition to the Bridge Phase.
