As a team, Longwood improved their score by at least eight strokes each day, ending with a three-round card of 312-295-287—894 (+54). Their strong performance in the final two rounds led to a surge up the leader board, as the team shot just seven-over par in their final 18 holes.
"I think that today's round is a much better representation of our golf team," said Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman. "Coming into this morning, our goals were simple—we wanted to treat each shot with attention that it deserves, and we wanted all five players to stay involved in the round all the way to the end. While we still hit some shots into tough spots and had times when things weren't going as well as we would have liked, I felt like we did a pretty good job of meeting both."
Brandon Weaver led Longwood, firing a final round 71 (+1) as he finished T-16th with a 72-75-71—218 (+8). The steady senior tallied the most pars in the field with 40, while averaging the 11th best scores on par fours at 4.17 (+6). Brendan Dunphy turned in his best round of 2021, firing a 70 (E) with four birdies to end his tournament in 49th. The sophomore led Longwood with nine birdies, 19th in the field.
Christian Michael was solid again, shooting three over on Tuesday to end at 78-70-73—221 (+3) and in a tie for 25th, the second-best finish on the team. In his return to the Longwood lineup, Ryan Hammer shrugged off a tough opening two holes to shoot even par the rest of the way, finishing at 73 (+3) on the day and 82-83-73—238 for the tournament while lifting him eight spots in the standings.
"We needed a few guys to play well, which both Brendan and Brandon did," added Fillman. We also needed others to hang in there and just find a way, which Christian and Ryan were able to do."
Freshman Nick Rakes, making his fourth straight appearance for Longwood to begin his collegiate career, rounded out the Lancer lineup, as he posted a final round 74 (+4) to end in 57th. As a team, no Lancer shot worse than 74 on Tuesday, as every golfer in the Longwood lineup shot under the average score of 75.66 in the final round.
"As for the tournament overall, we just dug ourselves into a big hole for much of yesterday's rounds," noted Fillman. "We definitely battled yesterday afternoon and again today, but it proved to be too deep for us to get all the way back out of it."
The Lancers will have one final tune-up prior to the Big South Championships, Longwood heads to Sparatanburg, S.C. for the Wofford Invitational from April 12-13. Hosted by Wofford, the event will be held at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
