ANN ABBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball suffered just its second loss of the season, falling, 76-53, to No. 4 Illinois on Tuesday night (March 2) at Crisler Center in a top-five contest.
Michigan (18-2, 13-2 Big Ten) could not string together scoring runs and went cold offensively for minutes at a time, helping the Illinois (19-6, 15-1 Big Ten) to come away victorious.
Senior Eli Brooks was the lone U-M player to score in double digits, scoring 11 on the night and going 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Austin Davis also had a solid performance off the bench, scoring nine points on 4-for-4 shooting. Senior Isaiah Livers had seven points and grabbed a team-best six boards, while also adding one block, and freshman Hunter Dickinson added six points, five rebounds and two steals.
Michigan and Illinois both struggled to get their offenses going as U-M suffered a six-minute scoring drought, before an and-one play from Brooks gave the Wolverines double-digit points with just over 12 minutes to play in the first half.
Illinois was the first to string points together, going on an 8-0 run while the Wolverines were cold for four minutes, to take a 16-10 advantage with 8:20 remaining in the half. The Wolverines continued to struggle through the end of the half, going into the halftime break trailing, 33-22.
The Michigan offense continued to struggle through the entire second half, going on two different scoring droughts of more than three minutes and Illinois went on a 9-0 run to take a 64-36 lead with 9:42 left.
The Wolverines found just five makes from the field in the closing 10 minutes.
Michigan will have a quick turnaround as it welcomes in-state rival Michigan State to Crisler Center on Thursday (March 4) at 7 p.m. for the Wolverines' Virtual Maize Out.
