BLUE HILL, Neb. (KSNB) - Down in Webster County, underneath the white Blue Hill water tower you may find Ladelle Hazen doing what she loves.

“I like the feeling,” Hazen said. “After you get done running there is usually an adrenaline rush.”

As a long distance runner, Hazen has her own way to motivate herself.

“Who can I get next,” she said. “So, if I’m lapping somebody. Who’s next in line so I can make my time better and become a better runner.”

That mindset has put her name in Blue Hill’s record books.

“She’s got our cross country record, our two-mile record, was really close two years ago with the one-mile record,” Blue Hill girls track coach Riley Armes said. “So, as far as best times in Blue Hill’s history she’s right towards the top.”

Her success drew eyes from colleges but not just ones close to Nebraska, as Hazen signed her national letter of intent to run track for Division I program, Hartford in Connecticut.

“When they called me, I didn’t even know where they were,” Hazen said. “So, I was pretty surprised when I found out and what division they were was pretty awesome when I found that out.”

For a small school, signing with a Division I school came with a learning curve.

“She said we have to do this NCAA eligibility thing and I said, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about? I’ve never heard it,’ So, I made a lot of phone calls,” Armes said.

The phone calls worked as she will run for the Hartford Hawks next fall. Even out on the East Coast, she will not forget what she has learned at Blue Hill.

“They taught me the value of things in a small town,” Hazen said. “So, that is going to be different from a big town cause you don’t know everyone and here you know almost everybody. So, I’m going to miss this place but I will definitely try to move back here after college.”

Hazen has her eyes set on bettering her times ahead of districts and then the State Meet where she hopes to medal like she did her sophomore season when she placed fifth in the 3200m.
