GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Grand Island City Council voted Tuesday night to move forward with their plans for a roundabout at Five Point. The roughly than $3.5 million project faced mixed reactions, with three council members voting against it.
Public Works Director John Collins said it would make the area much more safer than it is right now.
“The roundabout is anticipated to reduce collisions by about 37%, but reduce the severe collisions by almost 80%,” Collins told Local4 News before the meeting. “This was one the higher accident areas in town. During the study period, there were 80 accidents.”
He said it will not only be safer for drivers, but also for pedestrians.
“There’s virtually no one walking in that area today probably because the intersection is so hazardous,” Collins said. “With a roundabout, you’ll be crossing just one lane of traffic at a time and anyone can do that.”
Another benefit to the roundabout is that it’s estimate to cut travel time to nearly a third of what it is right now.
“If you look at the level of service for a signal, the wait is twice as long with a traffic signal than it is with a stop sign and a roundabout is even a little less,” Collins said.
Construction is set to begin in 2023.
