On this date five years ago, Dave Roberts earned his first win as Dodger manager in a 15–0 victory against the Padres.

The win on April 4, 2016, against his former club was the largest margin of victory for the Dodgers in Opening Day history. It was also the largest margin of victory in a shutout win on Opening Day in Major League history.

“I remember getting something afterward — I think it was not a shower but Adrián (González) putting stuff over my head,” Roberts recalled Sunday. “I remember being really excited getting №1. I remember being in San Diego. Time flies I guess, but I’ve been very, very fortunate, certainly.”

Clayton Kershaw spun seven one-hit innings in the victory. The Dodgers went on to sweep that series in San Diego.

Roberts was named Dodger manager on Nov. 23, 2015, and earned National League Manager of the Year honors in his first season with the club when his team went 91–71 in 2016. He joined the late Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda as the only managers in Dodger history to win the award since its inception in 1983.

Roberts went on to become the first Dodger manager to reach the postseason in each of his first five seasons with the club. His 38 playoff victories already ranks second among current managers behind only Terry Francona (40).

Here’s more from his first regular season game as Dodger manager:

Gonsolin placed on IL, Santana recalled

The Dodgers placed right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation and recalled right-handed pitcher Dennis Santana.

Gonsolin, who has yet to make his 2021 debut, will be backdated to April 1 on the IL. The right-hander was unavailable out of the bullpen Saturday night, and he still wasn’t feel right as of Sunday morning. There is no immediate timetable for his return.

“It’s something that’s kind of been lingering for the last few days,” said manager Dave Roberts. “He went out and played catch today, didn’t feel great. I think it’s more just really being cautious with Tony, obviously being such a big part of our club.”

Gonsolin made the Opening Day roster for the first time in his career after a standout 2020 season between the starting rotation and the bullpen.

He was 2–2 with a 2.31 ERA in nine games (eight starts) for the Dodgers last season. His 0.84 WHIP last year tied with Clayton Kershaw for the best mark among Dodger starters. He also led all Dodger pitchers in FanGraphs’ version of Wins Above Replacement (1.8) and was the 2020 Baseball America Rookie of the Year.

Santana was in the mix for the final bullpen spot coming out of Spring Training, but that ultimately went to Scott Alexander. The 24-year-old right-hander returns to the big league roster for his fourth season with the club after going 1–2 with a 5.29 ERA in 12 games last year.

Roberts said Kenley Jansen and Victor González, who pitched in back-to-back games, are unavailable for Sunday’s series finale in Colorado but the rest of the relievers are back on line.
