Bennett Named Freshman of the Year as Five Owls Earn ASUN Honors - Kennesaw State University Athletics - Kennesaw State Athletics

KENNESAW, Ga.

– Five Owls from the Kennesaw State softball team took home some ASUN hardware as the league announced its all-conference team Friday morning.

Sophomore Melanie Bennett was named ASUN Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the ASUN First Team All-Conference and All-Freshman team. Lexi Solorzano was one of three unanimous selections to be named First Team All-Conference. Brea Dickey and Taylor Cates each earned a spot on the ASUN First Team while Junior Christen Florence took home ASUN All-Conference Second Team honors.

The Owls' ace recorded 38 appearances on the year with 28 starts, logging a 2.02 ERA and a 19-11 record after tossing 186.2 innings while recording 20 complete games, including six shutouts, and three saves. Bennett fanned 160 batters to finish the season ranked second in the conference. She tossed a career-high 14 strikeouts against Bellarmine in game one of a three-game series that led the Owls to a three-game series sweep over the Knights. The Kennesaw, Ga., native recorded wins over UCF, Auburn and Georgia Tech. Bennett was tabbed ASUN Pitcher of the Week three times this season following her performances against Western Kentucky, UT Chattanooga, Indiana State (2/22), Tennessee, North Alabama (3/29), Georgia, FGCU and Lipscomb (4/12). Bennett qualified for freshman honors from an extra year of eligibility due to the 2020 season being cut short because of COVID-19. 

Solorzano appeared in all 51 games flipping between first base and catcher. She is second on the team with a .338 batting average, scoring 19 runs on 46 hits. The senior tallied 15 extra-base hits, seven doubles and is tied for second on the team with eight home runs. She helped turn and complete eight of the Owls 12 double plays. The Woodstock, Ga., native recorded 305 putouts to finish with a .979 fielding percentage. She was named to the 2021 ASUN All-Tournament Team following her performance in all four games of the conference tournament.

Appearing in all 51 games in left field, Dickey leads the team with a .366 batting average and a .615 slugging percentage, both ranking fourth in the league. In her 161 at-bats she scored 37 runs on 49 hits, logging 12 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 25 RBIs. Dickey recorded 71 putouts and two assists to finish the year as one of five players in the conference to record over 50 putouts with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. The redshirt senior was named ASUN Player of the Week after her performance in three games against Georgia Tech and Georgia State. She earned a spot on the 2021 ASUN All-Tournament team following her performance in all four games of the tournament.

Leading the team in home runs, Cates appeared in 49 games this season. In her 138 at-bats, she scored 24 runs on 33 hits, logged five doubles and finished with a .601 slugging percentage. She finished second in the league with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs. The junior recorded 47 putouts and 87 assists, finishing with a .893 fielding percentage while helping turn four of the Owls 12 double plays. The Canton, Ga., native was named ASUN Player of the Week following her performance in five games against Tennessee and North Alabama. She secured a spot on the ASUN All-Tournament Team following her efforts in all four games of the tournament.

Earning her second ASUN accolade of her career, Florence appeared in all 51 games at second base. Florence holds a .299 batting average and .388 slugging percentage over 147 at-bats. The Hampton, Ga., native recorded 20 runs on 44 hits with 10 extra base hits including eight doubles, one triple and one home run. Florence logged 26 RBIs this season. The red-shirt junior had 14 multi-hit games including games against UCF, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and Liberty. Florence recorded 90 putouts, 68 assists and helped turn eight of the Owls 12 double plays.

Catch these Owls and the rest of the squad in action Friday afternoon as they take on Florida State at 4:30 p.m. in day one of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional.
