BIG RAPIDS – Marissa Warren is a freshman who, like a lot of her teammates, is having a strong softball season for the Big Rapids Cardinals
Last week, she hit Marissa Warren hit .636 (14 for 22) with three doubles, 2 home runs, and 12 RBIs.
For the season, she is hitting .596 and leads the team with 62 hits (9 triples) and 60 runs scored.
“I do a lot of practice at home and work at getting my reps in,” she said. “A key is using your hips and getting that power in.”
Against Mount Pleasant which has a team with a lot of her friends Warren hit a home run, which she admitted was quite a thrill. She’s had two home runs so far.
“I came into the season thinking I could do well, but I think I’m exceeding my expectations,” Warren said.
Last summer, she played travel softball in Mount Pleasant. The experience helped her get in valuable time.
Warren plays catcher, first base and shortstop.
She indicated catcher is her best position.
“I think I’m a pretty good blocker,” said Warren, adding shortstop is her second best spot. “I have a good arm. As a team, we could execute our plays better.”
The Cardinals have a 16-game hitting streak.
“We need to keep our heads in the game, keep working hard and work together,” Warren said.
She also plays basketball and volleyball but said softball is her favorite.
