FRISCO — The first offensive player drafted by the Cowboys on Saturday comes with a major off-the-field issue.
Fourth-round pick, tackle Josh Ball from Marshall left the Florida State program in 2018 after being suspended by the university following domestic violence incidents involving a girlfriend.
In November 2017, Ball and the victim reached a joint resolution in the domestic violence case. While Ball wasn’t charged with a crime, the victim filed a petition for an injunction for protection against Ball, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Court records revealed there were 11 incidents where Ball displayed aggressive verbal and physical abuse.
There was an incident, according to court records, where Ball choked himself and Florida State football personnel had to render aid to him.
As part of the agreement between the parties, Ball agreed not to admit or deny any wrongdoing.
“That’s something in the past,” Ball said Saturday in a conference call. “It happened in the past. (NFL) teams obviously asked about that. It happened in the past and since then I’ve taken the time to grow as a human being and grow as a man and I think I’ve done a great job of that. I’m just ready to get down to Dallas and just be a great football player and athlete and I’ve learned from my mistakes and I’ve learned from the past. I’ve grown as a human being and I’m ready to get down to Frisco and get ready to work.”
Cowboys officials conduct extensive background checks on prospective draft picks. In some cases, the team will travel to a player’s hometown to visit law enforcement, family and friends. There was no face-to-face meeting with Ball because of the COVID-19 restrictions.
“We went in-depth,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “These are young men and not everybody is perfect and one of the biggest criteria we look at when we look at a young man is how he responds to adversity. How he moves forward? We felt comfortable with him and felt like he was going to do a great job for us going forward.”
