Men's East Region Qualifiers  I  Women's East Region Qualifiers

INDIANAPOLIS

– Five Eastern Kentucky University track and field student-athletes have qualified for the NCAA East Region Preliminary Championships, to be held May 26-29 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

Pedro García-Palencia (men's steeplechase), Ahmed Jaziri (men's steeplechase), Quantasia Perry (women's 200 meters), Kayla Smith (women's 100 meters) and Laura Taborda (women's steeplechase) will compete at Visit Jax Track at Hodges Stadium for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships.

The top-48 performances from the season in every event – after scratches, injuries, etc. – earned entry to the NCAA East Region Prelims. The top-12 finishers from each event at the East and West Regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships, to be held June 9-12 in Eugene, Oregon.

This will be the first career regional appearance for all five Colonels.

García-Palencia enters the meet on a high note, as he won the men's steeplechase at the OVC Championships last Friday. His winning time of 8:51.4 was an OVC Championships record and a personal-best. The freshman from Benicàssim, Spain is ranked No. 36 in the field.

Jaziri will be one of the steeplechase favorites at the meet, as he ranks No. 3 in the East Region with a school-record time of 8:32.9. The junior from Rades, Tunisia ran that time at the Trials of Miles Qualifier in Kansas City on May 5.

García-Palencia and Jaziri will race in the men's steeplechase on Friday, May 28, at 6:10 p.m. ET.

Perry qualified for the regional meet by running a school-record 200 time of 23.59 last Saturday at the OVC Championships. She took silver in that race. Perry also owns the EKU record in the indoor 200 meters (24.27). The redshirt sophomore from Covington, Georgia is ranked No. 32 in the field.

Perry will race in the first round on Thursday night, May 27, at 8:45 p.m. ET.

Smith qualified in the 100 by running a school-record 11.53 at the UNF Invitational on May 4. She ran that time at Visit Jax Track at Hodges Stadium, the same track that will be hosting the NCAA East Region Preliminaries. Smith won gold in the 100 meters last Saturday at the OVC Championships. The freshman from Lincolnton, North Carolina enters the meet ranked No. 36 in the field.

Smith will race in the first round on Thursday, May 27, at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Perry and Smith are the first EKU sprinters to qualify for an NCAA regional since the move to the current format over a decade ago.

Taborda enters the meet ranked No. 48 in the women's steeplechase. The redshirt freshman from Covilha, Portugal qualified with a school-record time of 10:22.0, which she ran at the Ole Miss Joe Walker Invitational on April 8. Taborda took silver in the steeplechase last Friday at the OVC Championships.

She will race on Saturday, May 29, at 6:10 p.m. ET.
