Five Vacaville High seniors signed letters of intent Tuesday to pursue their sport in college at Harold Youngblood Gymnasium.
Mia Lopez will be attending Lewis and Clark College to play softball and her teammate Phoebi Waller is attending Sterling College to play softball.
Maya Holman will be running track at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Her teammate Ryan Scholtes will be attending George Fox University to run track and cross country.
Dakota Lodel will be playing football at Southern Nazarene University.
The signing ceremony took place in the gym in front of family and friends.
Here are their coaches’ thoughts on each athlete.
Destinee Santistevan, head softball coach
“Mia Lopez is one of the most dedicated young ladies I know and she carries herself with great dignity, ever since her freshman year. Mia has been a key part of our power-hitting numbers and a fearless mindset as corner (third base) starting for us for the last four years. She not only works hard to be a power player on the field but a power hitter at the books as well. On the field you can count on Mia to be the first and last player there. She’s the one the girls can turn to for help.
“Phoebi Waller has been giving us her all since her freshman year. I am so proud of her. She has performed for us in playoffs with her speed and effort. She shows no fear in the outfield and always gets the job done that a coach asks for. Phoebi is a delightful young lady. You can’t help but smile when you are around her. Phoebi is the one we count on for that morale boost because she always is positive and says something to lighten the mood.”
Darren Coleman, head track and field coach
“One of the things that I appreciate about Maya Holman is that she was always working beyond the requirements of the workout day. She went the extra mile, lifted the extra weight and stayed overtime to get better. Maya was always a naturally talented athlete but she didn’t rest on her past abilities. Track and field gave her a more personal mental challenge as well as a physical one. Time is your enemy more than in other sports. Sometimes that is the hardest thing to separate.
“I appreciated her leadership skills and how she led by example. But most of all what I appreciate about Maya was her will to succeed. Even after being told that she wasn’t even talented enough to run track in a junior college, she didn’t accept that. Quit was not in her and as you can see that it all paid off.”
Dave Monk, cross country and long-distance track coach
“Ryan Scholtes made an incredible commitment to better himself over the past couple years and had an amazing impact elevating those around him. He’s a young man with remarkable character which guides him in all he does. He was the perfect example of our team quote, ‘Pursue excellence in all we do.’ He has a very bright future ahead of him.”
Mike Papadopolous, head football coach
“Dakota Lodel is a two-year varsity letterman in football. He played on the defensive line for the Bulldogs and was a tremendous run stopper as well as pass rusher. He is a passionate, hard-working individual both in the classroom and on the field. I am very excited for this well-deserved opportunity for him. Southern Nazarene University is a great fit academically and athletically for him.”
