Home Run Ball Eliminates Softball from ASUN Tournament in Extras - FGCU Athletics

KENNESAW, Ga. – The FGCU softball team's (28-19) season came to a close in eight innings as the Eagles fell to Jacksonville (29-19) by a final of  3-1, Friday afternoon at Bailey Park.

"Credit it to Jacksonville for coming up with the big hit at the end," said head coach David Deiros. "It was a 1-1 game through seven innings and we kept battling to the very end. I want to thank our eight seniors for what they have given to this program over the past four years. It was a unique season to say the least and one we'll remember for a long time."

The Eagles (No. 1 South seed) were hitless until the bottom of the fourth where they scored one run on three hits. Johneisha Rowe (Avon Park, Fla./Sebring HS) led off the frame with a single up the middle but was out on second on the force with McKenna Batterton (Norco, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt HS) reaching on the fielder's choice. Moments later on a 0-1 pitch, Reedy Davenport St. Johns, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) roped an RBI double to the right-center gap to give FGCU the 1-0 lead.

It was short-lived as JU (No. 3 South seed) quickly tied the game with a solo home run to left off the bat of Caroline Watson in the top of the fifth. Following the inning, starting pitcher Sarah Lawton (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross HS/FSW) retired nine Dolphins in a row before a two-out single in the eighth broke it up. The next batter, Hannah Roberts, then lifted a two-run shot to left for the 3-1 lead.

Emily Estroff (Coconut Creek, Fla./Coral Springs Charter/Villanova) responded a leadoff single, making it to second on a sac bunt from Rowe before a pop fly to right field put her on third with two away.  It's all FGCU would get as another flyout, this time to center, sealed the game for Jacksonville.

FGCU outhit JU, 6-5, with its 1-4 hitters collecting one hit apiece. Lawton finishes the season 8-7, scattering five hits on three runs while striking out six with one walk.
