LEETONIA — The Leetonia school board this week approved five-year financial forecast that shows a positive cash balance throughout.

Presented by Treasurer Jennifer Coldsnow, the forecast shows $6.39 million the first year and slipping to $4.9 million in the fifth. Deficit spending is projected at nearly $86,000 in the first year, is absent the second, then falls the remaining three, topping $782,000 in the fifth.

Coldsnow noted, however, she believes there will be no deficit spending this year due to expenditures continuing to fall under the Elementary and Secondary Schools Education Relief Funds (ESSER) for covid. She said federal funding sent to school districts through ESSER has helped offset the loss of state funding and additional Federal CARES Act funding was used to offset the cost of substitute teachers and cleaning costs caused by the pandemic.

Schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham said the positive forecast is a reflection of everybody’s efforts.

“To be in the black for five years is not something that happens by accident,” he said. “It required a lot of hard work by the board and [Coldsnow] and employees to make it happen.”

In other business, Dunham reported the summer learning program has 100 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through 12, with over 80 in grades kindergarten through six including 24 in kindergarten alone.

The district is using ESSER funds to offer its Bear Care K-6 Summer Camp July 5 through Aug. 5 for students entering grades kindergarten through six. It will include fun summer activities on and off campus with free breakfast and lunch plus transportation.

The Leetonia 7-12 Summer Series, for students entering grades seven through 12, will be held in two sessions — June 7 through July 1 and July 5 through Aug. 5. It will include field trips, enrichment, credit recovery and technology skills training with free breakfast and lunch plus transportation.

“I’m excited beyond words about what we’ll be able to do with these kids before school starts,” Dunham said.

The board approved 11 teachers at $35 per hour and five aides at $20 per hour for the summer learning program.

Also at the meeting, the board granted supplemental coaching contracts for 2021-2022 to Eric Rice for girls varsity head soccer, Chris Roth for senior class advisor, Amy Gibson for substitute coordinator, Dennis T. Kellison for boys varsity assistant basketball, Grant Hurless for girls and boys basketball volunteer and Patrick Hull for assistant basketball volunteer; approved as band volunteers for 2021-2022 Luke Nappi, Emily Shar, Tricia Viets and Harley Smith; and accepted the resignation of Raema Gory as a long-term substitute bus driver.

The board also approved a one-year extension for the Bears to Bee preschool to be housed at the K-12 campus in the same location as this year and accepted donations of $2,177 from VFW Post 5532 for school T-shirts, $400 from Humtown Products for the Stadium Project Fund, $4,000 from the Leetonia Ruritan Club for the Ruritan Scholarship Fund, $50 from Paul Sutherin in memory of Mr. Tsipis for the Rob Perkins Memorial Scholarship Fund, $50 from Diane Perkins in memory of Gloria Rubbo for the elementary library and $2,000 from the Leetonia Eagles 1496 for the Eagles Scholarship Fund.
