No one was harder on Connor Okrzesik following the Allen Turner Pro Late Model Series opener in April than the Alabama racer was on himself.
After taking the lead with eight laps to go, Okrzesik appeared set to start the year with a win in the Pro Late Model track championship at Five Flags Speedway. Instead, a late caution and what Okrzesik called a “stupid mistake” on the restart that night allowed Matt Craig to take the checkered flag.
A month later, Okrzesik still doesn’t pull any punches when describing that final restart. However, the speed he showed that night has him excited to get back on track and score redemption this Friday at Five Flags.
“We were the fastest car last time and should have won, no excuses,” Okrzesik told Speed51. “I feel like we have a good shot at winning.”
“I just made a mistake. It is what it is. It’s a mistake, it happens. Everybody makes mistakes. I can’t really beat myself up too hard about it, I’ve just got to not do it again.”
Okrzesik still managed a second-place finish that night. Unfortunately, it was the only race he has finished thus far in 2021, adding to the hunger for a strong showing Friday night.
“I really want to win. We’ve had a horrible season, to say the least. That doesn’t even begin to describe it. I think we’ve finished one race this year. I just want to get the monkey off my back, get that first win, and start rolling forward.”
“It happens to everybody. The Five Flags race, I think, was the first race I’ve finished since the All American 400. We’ve just had horrible, horrible luck. A bunch of difficulties, we’re ironing everything out and hoping we have everything fixed. We’ve had really great race cars this year, we just haven’t had a chance to show it.”
Despite the adversity, Okrzesik is confident he and his team will be able to return to victory lane soon based on their speed, perhaps as soon as this Friday at Five Flags.
Once we have a chance to show it, we’re going to start knocking off wins. It’s tough, but you have to keep moving forward. I’m just hungry for my first win of the season. – Connor Okrzesik
