What is the Veiled Prophet Ball?
“The Office” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” star Ellie Kemper’s past is stirring up controversy after fans discovered she was crowned the queen of the 1999 Veiled Prophet Ball when she was 19 years old.
Newsweek reports a photo has gone viral as social media users pointed out the annual debutante ball in St. Louis has a racist past.
According to The Atlantic, the initially whites-only event “emphasized the existing power structure” of the city when it launched in 1878 and banned Black and Jewish Americans from joining for decades.
Kemper, whose family is one of the wealthiest in Missouri, was considered a shoo-in to win the event now known as the Fair Saint Louis Ball.
