IRVINE, Calif. – Five Concordia University Irvine baseball players have been recognized as among the best NCAA DII players in the West Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
Centerfielder Matt Lautz led the way for CUI on the First Team. Eagles first baseman Bailey Collins, right fielder Jair Donovan, pitcher Evan Larsen and designated hitter Cooper Moore were all named as ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-Region selections.
All five Eagles have been recognized by other organizations at the regional level in recent weeks after helping CUI finish the season on a 10-3 tear. CUI made a push for the postseason, but the West Region was the only NCAA DII region to take just three teams to the regional, and CUI finished No. 4 in the regional rankings.
"It is awesome to be able to get some recognition from the region along with my four teammates," said Lautz. "We have been doing this for a long time and have put in countless hours of work together and on our own. We all wish the season could have ended differently, but it's nice to be able to go out on a high note along with my teammates."

Lautz and Larsen were recently named First Team All-Region by the D2CCA (Division Two Conference Commissioners Association) which is voted on by NCAA DII sports information directors. Collins and Moore were Second Team All-Region picks by both the D2CCA and National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Donovan and Lautz also were tabbed Second Team All-Region with the NCBWA.
Collins smacked 14 homers to lead the entire PacWest Conference in that category and being an on-base machine. He finished his career tied for first all-time with 35 total home runs.
It's the second time in Moore's career he's been recognized in this way by the ABCA. Donovan and Moore also joined Collins in the top ten for career homers.
Lautz and all other ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first-team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. II All-America teams will be announced on Friday, June 4.

"After the shortened COVID-19 year, we were all devastated our final year came to end," said Lautz. "Everything they gave us after that was a blessing and from then on we all had a new appreciation for the game and what we were able to do on a day-to-day basis. We left everything we had out on the field and because of that I'm happy the way everything turned out. Senior Day was an amazing way to cap off a great career and we really appreciate everyone involved that made that day so special."
The ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove teams for all divisions will be announced Wednesday, June 23.
The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 13,000 members represent all 50 states and 25 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth.
