Summer Ball Spotlight: Lux Hits Walk-Off Single - Duke University - GoDuke.com

After the conclusion of the 2021 Duke baseball season, many student-athletes reported to summer ball teams across the country. Throughout the summer, GoDuke.com will periodically highlight Blue Devil's performances during the season.

Rising senior Damon Lux has gotten off to a hot start with the Kalamazoo Growlers in the Northwoods League, batting 6-for-16 with two runs and six RBIs in just six games. Lux's biggest moment at the plate thus far came on Tuesday as the Shelbyville, Ind., native hit a walk-off single to power the Growlers to a 4-3 win against the Battle Creek Bombers.

Lux reported to Kalamazoo on June 17, missing the first couple weeks of the season. The outfielder, primarily playing left field for the Growlers, has made an immediate impact. For Lux, the focus of his summer ball season is to prepare to vie for a starting spot in the outfield on the 2022 Duke team with the departures of All-ACC honoree Joey Loperfido and power-hitter Peter Matt.

"I'm just looking forward to getting exposure to pitchers, at-bats and reps, all the things I need to do to sharpen up my skill set and be ready to compete for a job in the fall," Lux said. "There are plenty of guys with experience that are going to be leaving and I feel like it is my job to fill their shoes and keep the ball rolling, because we have been so hot the past few years."

Lux's start to the season is something to be proud of. Through six games, he is batting .375 with a .571 on-base percentage. He has emphasized controlling the zone while in the box and hunting strikes early in the season.

The highlight of the season thus far is the walk-off hit on June 22. The Growlers fell into a hole early, going down 3-1 after the third inning. Two runs in the fifth tied the game, and the score stayed locked until the ninth inning.

Lux stepped up to the plate with bases loaded and two outs. In a 1-1 count, Lux connected on a curveball up the middle directly at the pitcher, hitting off his back and going towards third which allowed the speedster to beat it out to first to plate the winning run and secure the Growlers fifth win in a row.

"The next pitch he threw me was a curveball in the zone and my mindset at that point was hard middle," Lux said. "I got a curveball for a strike and was able to get some good wood on it and hit it up the middle and it ricocheted off of him."

There are a couple familiar faces on the Growlers with Lux as infielder Luke Storm and southpaw Kyle Salley are also on the team. Lux has enjoyed playing with Duke teammates in a different setting.

"It is awesome," Lux continued. "It eases the process of acclimation to the team. I came in here only knowing two guys and knowing them makes it easier to get to know the other guys since you have a level of comfort with the guys that you know."
