Several top litigators at the Portland law firm Ball Janik are leaving to start their own.
Attorneys Jim McDermott, Gabe Weaver, Ciaran Connelly and Dwain Clifford all will leave Ball Janik to form McDermott Weaver Connelly Clifford LLP, which will focus on business litigation.
McDermott has for years led Ball Janik’s litigation department, which includes Weaver and Connelly. Clifford chaired Ball Janik’s insurance recovery practice.
The split will avoid what the departing attorneys described as increasing potential for conflicts of interest between Ball Janik’s business litigation practice and its work for the public sector.
The departures appeared amicable, with Ball Janik leaders saying in a statement they were open to collaborating with the new firm in the future.
Ball Janik started in 1982 with a specialty in real estate and land use. On Thursday, it announced it would lease 17,000 square feet of newly renovated offices in its current building, moving from the 11th to the 18th floor at the One Main Place tower.
