WASHINGTON (AP and HOI)- House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy has picked five Republicans, including Central Illinois Congressman Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville), to sit on the new select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

McCarthy selected Davis, who represents Illinois' 13th Congressional District that includes parts of central and southwest Illinois.

Davis has been talked about as a possible GOP candidate for governor to challenge incumbent Democrat JB Pritzker. Davis has not ruled out a run for governor, but said he prefers to run again for Congress.

Indiana Rep. Jim Banks will be the top Republican on the panel. McCarthy also tapped Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, North Dakota Rep. Kelly Armstrong and Texas Rep. Troy Nehls to serve on the panel.

McCarthy's picks were confirmed by a Republican familiar with the decision and an aide to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of an official announcement.

Pelosi must still approve McCarthy's selections.
