Three cyclists were injured when they crashed during New York City’s annual Five Boro Bike Tour on Sunday, according to authorities.
The participants were hurt just after 10 a.m. when they collided amid a “bottleneck” around East 71st Street on the FDR Drive in Manhattan, the FDNY and cops said. The injured were taken to Cornell and Bellevue hospitals.
FDNY radio chatter posted on Citizen indicated a bike collision occurred in a southbound lane.
Event organizer Bike New York only had one person “requiring medical attention” and said the cyclist was hurt during a crash.
The FDR, Verrazzano Bridge and a portion of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway are all closed to car traffic for the annual ride, which had up to 32,000 participants pre-pandemic.
The 40-mile ride did not happen in 2020 for the first time since it began in 1977. Event organizer Bike New York limited this year’s ride to 20,000 people due to COVID-19.
