Grammy-winning country star Kacey Musgraves will headline Denver’s Ball Arena on Feb. 16, 2022, as part of her 15-date North American tour, joining an early-2022 calendar crammed with postponed shows at the venue.
Musgraves’ “Star Crossed: Unveiled,” announced today by promoter AEG Presents, is a “limited” tour behind the new album “Star-Crossed,” to be released Sept. 21. Tickets are on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at kaceymusgraves.com/tour.
Fans can sign up for early access at starcrossedunveiled.com, AEG Presents officials said in a press statement. American Express cardholders also can buy tickets before the general public beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, through Wednesday, Sept. 8.
Prices were not available as of this writing.
Musgraves’ show is part of a jam-packed schedule for early 2022 at Ball Arena, including several shows that will have been delayed by up to two years. Big concerts during those months — most taking place in February and March — include Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, Celine Dion, Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, John Mayer, Tyler the Creator and Deftones.
The announcement also comes on the heels of dozens of canceled or postponed tours by other major artists, such as BTS, Garth Brooks, Nine Inch Nails and Stevie Nicks. Similar concerns over rising cases of the delta variant of COVID-19 — or, in some cases, positive tests by band and touring members — have caused Florida-Georgia Line, Colorado’s String Cheese Incident, Neil Young, Pixies, Counting Crows, Korn and others to cancel individual shows or runs of shows.
Promoters and touring artists have increasingly responded by setting rules that include proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 tests with 48 to 72 hours of the show, at minimum, while some artists have set even stricter rules for their shows.
It all amounts to tricky timing for Musgraves, whose promotional cycle for “Star-Crossed” has kicked into high gear with a New York Times profile and a Friday, Aug. 27, video drop of her new single, “Justified.”
The live music arena has lately become a battleground in the culture wars around vaccinations and COVID-19 rules. Live Nation does not yet have a requirement for artists to be fully vaccinated, The Los Angeles Times reported. That’s a potential problem since artists like Van Morrison, who has publicly opposed vaccine requirements, has a Live Nation-booked lease event at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 2, and Eric Clapton, who starts a U.S. tour in September, has said he will cancel shows at any venue that requires proof of vaccination, the Times reported.
Despite the concerns and parade of postponements, major national tours are still announcing new Denver shows (like Musgraves’) while adding strict requirements for entry, such as Phish (which has a Labor Day run coming up in Commerce City) and Dead & Co. (which has Oct. 22-23 concerts at Greenwood Village’s Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre). Both are outdoors.
More than a half-dozen music festivals, such as The UMS (which concluded on Aug. 29), are barreling forward before live music heads indoors for the fall and winter.
