MUNCIE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — Following the most recent CDC guidance, the Ball State University President announced Wednesday that masks will be required for all while inside any university building.
According to the letter by President Geoffrey S. Mearns, all employees, students, and campus visitors, regardless of their vaccination status, are required to wear a mask inside the buildings with limited exceptions.
"Throughout the pandemic, we have relied on the CDC and other public health experts to inform our University’s health and safety protocols," the letter reads. "By relying on that expertise, we have been able to overcome the many dynamic challenges presented by the ongoing global pandemic."
"My decision is also driven by our own experience last academic year. For example, we implemented a pre-arrival testing protocol for the Spring 2021 semester. That enhanced protocol enabled us to mitigate the transmission of the virus on our campus for several months even though, at that time, the number of new cases was very high in our region. I believe this modification to our current mask protocol will enable us this Fall semester to sustain the vibrant on-campus experience that we all value so much."
Like other colleges and universities across the nation, Ball State lifted its mask requirements when the COVID-19 pandemic eased earlier this year.
But last Friday, Purdue University in West Lafayette put a mandate back in place. The Purdue Northwest branch of the university has done likewise.
Purdue University Fort Wayne officials are meeting Wednesday regarding the matter.
A mask mandate has not been enacted at Indiana University, though a vaccination requirement there has triggered a so-far-unsuccessful legal challenge.
