The Tennessee Vols are currently in the midst of a four-man quarterback battle.
Junior Brian Maurer, sophomore Harrison Bailey, Michigan transfer Joe Milton, and Virginia Tech transfer Hendon Hooker are all competing to be the starting quarterback when the Vols open the 2021 season on September 2 against Bowling Green.
Quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle is hoping the competition will start to narrow in the not-so-distant future.
Joey Halzle: We are pressing for guys to start seperating themselves, which will give guys more reps and start cutting down in others.

Offensive coordinator Alex Golesh said this week that the ability to push the ball down the field is one of the traits the Vols are looking for in a starting quarterback. That would seemingly indicate that arm strength will be an important attribute in this quarterback battle.
And that would seem to favor one specific quarterback.
According to sophomore wide receiver Jimmy Calloway, Milton has the strongest arm on the team.
Calloway said that all the quarterbacks throw the same — except for Milton, who throws a “bullet”.

This battle is still wide open. And each quarterback has their strengths.
Milton, however, seems to be the perceived leader in the clubhouse at the moment.
Could that change?
Absolutely. Anyone making a prediction right now is just guessing. But if I had to bet on who the starter will be in week one, I’d probably place my wager on Milton.
