Fans crammed the outfield seats at Comerica Park last week, hoping to be the one to catch Miguel Cabrera’s 500th home run.
After the catch would come the drama: Would the fan give it back? Sell to the highest bidder? Perhaps trade it in for some Tigers’ swag and a meeting with Miggy?
As it turns out, there was no suspense: The famed ball landed in the batting cage area adjacent to the Detroit Tigers’ bullpen at Rogers Centre in Toronto. It was retrieved by bullpen catcher Tim Remes, verified by MLB authenticators and then presented to Cabrera in the Tigers’ clubhouse.
“We don’t have to fight anybody for the rights to that ball, so it’ll go up on Miggy’s mantle and he’ll keep it forever,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said.
Cabrera said it would be going home with him.
“Our bullpen catcher had the ball. He gave it to me and I appreciated that,” Cabrera said afterwards. “I want to save it. It’ll be something special in my house. I’m excited.”
