Prisons Updates Names of Five Facilities - C.A. Dillon Youth Development Center

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

The names of five North Carolina prison facilities will change effective Oct. 4 in an effort to update them to 21st century cultural standards.

“These changes are being made to better reflect the diversity of modern-day society,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. “In this day and age, it is unacceptable to maintain facility names with negative historical connotations.”

Over the past year, the Department of Public Safety conducted an in-depth review of the historical aspects of the names of all its state-owned or operated facilities. During this review, officials  determined the names of five prison facilities should be changed in sensitivity to the cultural legacy issues that have been part of the national conversation in recent years.

Effective Oct. 4, four prison facilities and a residential drug and alcohol treatment facility will be renamed as follows:
•    Caledonia Correctional Institution in Tillery will become Roanoke River Correctional Institution.
•    Morrison Correctional Institution in Hoffman will become Richmond Correctional Institution.
•    Polk Correctional Institution in Butner will become Granville Correctional Institution.
•    Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women in Black Mountain will become Western Correctional Center for Women.
•    DART Cherry residential treatment facility in Goldsboro will become DART Center.

The staff at those five facilities had input into choosing the new names.

“It was important to me that the staff have a say in the names of the places they work, and they preferred names with local community significance,” said Ishee. “I strongly believe they should not have to work in facilities named to honor those who may have oppressed their ancestors.”
In its research, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) looked into the historical context for the names of 1,893 buildings that are part of 240 complexes owned or operated by DPS.

The Polk, Morrison and DART Cherry facilities were flagged when research indicated they were named for historical figures whose race-related actions do not represent DPS's values.

Polk Correctional was named for William Polk, a Revolutionary War officer who owned slaves.

Morrison Correctional was named for former Gov. Cameron Morrison, who was a leader of the "Red Shirts," a violent, post-Civil War organization that promoted white supremacy.

The DART Cherry facility was named for former Gov. Gregg Cherry, who advocated to drop civil rights from the Democratic party platform in the 1940s.

Caledonia Correctional stems from the property’s use as an antebellum plantation, where crops were grown and harvested with slave labor.

Swannanoa Correctional’s name was tied to the construction of the Swannanoa Tunnel in Asheville, which appears to have resulted in the deaths of numerous Black offender-laborers in the late 1800s.

Five Essential Beat Tapes From The Philadelphia Scene - NPR

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

Small Professor is featured in this week's installment of Slingshot City Scenes. Dewey Saunders

Dewey Saunders

This article was originally featured on WXPN's The Key on May 20.

In recent years, the beat-making community has grown into a global movement. Once a small, insular guild of folks with specialized skills, the knowledge required to make beats has been democratized via YouTube tutorials, info-sharing message boards, and more. Coupled with the fact that access to the technology required to produce tracks has opened up, allowing people from all walks of life to produce music for musical communities around the world, and beat-making is flourishing in 2021.

Predictably, this dynamic exists here in Philly as well. Our city boasts a great variety of producers who can not only make tracks for artists, they showcase their skills by creating and releasing their own independent instrumental projects. Here are five of the best recent beat tapes by producers with deep ties to our city's music scene.

Rolled Gold, Archetype Beats Vol. 4

For years, Philly-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Rolled Gold has been carving out a distinct sound built around crisp kicks and snares, as well as soulful chord progressions. For the fourth volume of his Archetype Beats series, Rolled Gold lays down nine breezy instrumental tracks that are a perfect complement to a nice smoke or meditation session.

GentleJawns, GentleJawns Vol 2

Working under the name GentleJawns, Joie Kathos and Jacqueline Constance create beats that are colorful and understated. With tracks like the dreamy Neo-Soul bop "After 2am" and "I Don't Know" with its atmospheric synths, GentleJawns Vol 2 establishes a sound that is bittersweet, rich and nocturnal.

AP, FREE WRLD

FREE WRLD is an impressive debut beat tape from up-and-coming producer AP. Whether it's the soulful keys and bouncy drum break on "Eastcoast Sweatshirt" or the slick, Fela-esque groove of "Afro," the entire tape is full of inventive tracks, and it's exciting to imagine what AP will do next behind the boards.

Small Professor, A Jawn Supreme (Vol. 1-3)

For the past 10 years, Small Professor's Jawns series has acted as an outlet for the Philly-born producer to flex his adept sample flipping skills. A Jawn Supreme (Vol. 1-3) is a peak in Small Pro's long and varied career with each tape showcasing his evocative and quirky approach to manipulating and arranging samples.

Deion, Life Is Beats Part II

Jersey-born and Philly-raised producer/filmmaker Deion's Life Is Beats Part II acts as the score to Life Is Strange, a film that Deion created and released independently this year. With the film's story focusing on two brothers on the run from law enforcement, this soulful soundtrack sets a dramatic tone that is rich with emotion.

‘The Five’ address potential surge of 60k migrants to the southern border - Fox News

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

Panama has alerted U.S. officials that there’s the potential for 60,000 migrants to rush the southern border while hundreds of thousands have already entered the country this year.

The Five’ co-host Dan Bongino questioned the presence of a border at all if its function is not to separate nations, protect citizens and ensure national security.

"We don’t have a border," he said. "Can we please just stop the silliness that there’s a southern border?"

Bongino reiterated the definition of a border as a "delineation point" between two landmasses but the administration’s policy deteriorates the existence of any physical boundary.

DEL RIO COALITION HELPED OVER 1,000 MIGRANTS COORDINATE TRAVEL IN JUST THREE DAYS

"So if the theory is, well, you can kind of walk back and forth however you want… then why are you even saying we have a border?" he asked. "You can call it a uni-country, you can call it a landmass, but the border isn’t designed to be a suggestion."

Bongino argued that the immigration surge was "clearly intentional" by Democrats who have acted surprised as the number of migrants has spiked.

"Democrats aren’t dumb," he said. "This is clearly intentional and we should stop pretending it isn’t."

Co-host Jesse Watters shared his frustration for the Biden administration reversing Donald Trump’s remain-in-Mexico policy.

"Remain-in-Mexico policy is such a gift Trump gave this guy," he said. "And Joe’s just spitting on it. Let them stay in Mexico and apply for asylum there."

Watters suggested the president promise Mexico millions of more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in exchange for an agreement to stop sending caravans across the border.

"The Story" host Martha MacCallum explained that migrants coming by the tens of thousands have been waiting for the green light to cross over into the U.S. and "who can blame them" when they see relatives and friends successfully doing just that.

"The strategy has been quite clear and that is to allow people to come," she said. "Why wouldn’t you come? It’s a better place to live, there are more jobs and you get free money and health care."

Avs Continue Preseason Against Wild at Ball Arena - BlueJackets.com

The Colorado Avalanche is set to host the Minnesota Wild in its preseason home opener on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT at Ball Arena, the second game of the 2021-22 preseason for the Avs.

The contest is one of three exhibition games that Colorado will host before its season opener at home on Oct. 13 versus the Chicago Blackhawks. Having opened the preseason at the Vegas Golden Knights, the Avs will face the Wild, Knights and Dallas Stars twice each before the start of the regular season.

The Avalanche (0-1-0) began the exhibition schedule with a 4-3 loss in Vegas on Tuesday while the Wild (0-1-0) opened its preseason falling 6-2 to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.

Avalanche vs. Minnesota Wild

Ball Arena | Denver, Colo.

COLORADO-MINNESOTA CONNECTIONS

Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson is from Bloomington, Minnesota, and played one season at the University of Minnesota in 2006-07… Colorado forward Sampo Ranta played three seasons at the University of Minnesota (2018-2021)… Avs netminder Hunter Miska is from North Branch, Minnesota, and played at the University of Minnesota Duluth (2016-17)…

Minnesota goaltender Andrew Hammond finished the 2017-18 campaign with Colorado… Wild assistant coach Darby Hendrickson played for the Avalanche in the 2003-04 season.

HISTORY

The Avalanche went 1-1-0 against the Wild in the 2019-20 preseason, having not played preseason games in 2020-21. In the 2020-21 regular season, Colorado maintained a 5-2-1 record versus Minnesota.

The Avalanche own a 55-45-14 all-time record against the Wild during the regular season, with a 30-23-4 home record and a 25-22-10 road record.

ROSTER REPORT

Colorado reduced its training camp roster to 47 players on Wednesday afternoon, reassigning forwards Alex Beaucage, Nick Henry and Dalton Smith and goaltender Trent Miner.

The Avs will announce their game roster on Thursday morning, though head coach Jared Bednar said after Wednesday's practice that there is a "good chance" rookie forwards Alex Newhook and Sampo Ranta are in the lineup.

INJURY UPDATE

Defenseman Devon Toews (upper body) is anticipated to miss the beginning of the season, although he has been skating by himself through camp in a non-contact jersey. Prospects Tarun Fizer (upper body) and Roland McKeown (COVID-19 protocol) also remain on Colorado's injured list.

NOTEBOOK

The Avalanche will play three home games and three road games during the preseason, facing the Golden Knights, Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars twice each (once at home, once on the road). The squad opens the season on Oct. 13… Colorado's next face off against the Wild is set for just after the weekend on Monday in Minnesota.

Notebook: Red zone, ball security top offensive priorities - Patriots.com

One stat that jumps out when analyzing the Patriots first three games of the season is in the red zone, where the Pats are dead last in the league, picking up touchdowns on just 25 percent of their trips inside the 20. For comparison, Tampa has thrown three times as many passes inside the red zone as the Patriots, with six touchdowns to one.

New England will look to get on track against a Bucs defense that ranks 12th in the league in red-zone defense.

"They're really good, a lot of good players at every single level," said tight end Hunter Henry on Thursday. "We've got to be smart about what we're doing and execute our gameplan and take care of the ball, I think that's one of the biggest things."

Executing in the red zone and avoiding penalties, like Henry's false start on fourth down last week, will be critical against a good team like the Buccaneers.

"We need to get down there [inside the red zone] more, we need to finish drives all the way," said Henry, "We've also killed ourselves with penalties, I was part of that last week.

"We've gotta be locked in and finish those drives. We're kind of stalling on the fringe of the red zone and kicking a lot of field goals. We need to get into the red zone then we can execute those things."

While Henry and Jonnu Smith were veteran arrivals who are assimilating into the offense, rookie Mac Jones has impressed Henry with his progress. Last season, Henry saw first-round pick Justin Herbert follow a similar path, as the chemistry between Mac and tight ends continues to grow.

"Mac's done a good job, he's going to continue to get better, I saw that last year [in Herbert] and I'm seeing that in Mac, the daily improvements each week," said Henry. "Every time you step on the field, all of us, the more you see, the more you're going to be able to process things. All the guys respect him and admire him, we're behind him 100 percent."

Sunday night's contest looms large over the week of preparation but Henry's been around the block in the NFL. Still, it's easy to get up for any NFL game, especially one on national television.

"Sunday night football, it's the only game on TV at the time, all the eyeballs are on it," said Henry. "It's a big game, going against a really good opponent. I think all of us are really excited."

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

Pepsi, the NFL and Roc Nation have assembled a lineup of trailblazing musicians to perform the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show: Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar will take the world's biggest stage at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022, airing on NBC and Telemundo, and streaming live on Peacock.

The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show marks the first time these five multi-award-winning artists will perform together on stage, exciting music fans worldwide and holding a special significance for the greater Los Angeles community, as they host the Super Bowl for the first time in nearly 30 years. Collectively, these artists have been awarded 43 Grammys and have created 22 No. 1 Billboard albums.

Dr. Dre is widely credited with being one of the most influential figures in hip hop culture and a driving force behind its mass popularity. While all five artists have deeply influenced this genre of music, each brings a unique style to the world's biggest stage for what's sure to be 12 minutes of unforgettable greatness.

As part of the collaboration around the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show, Pepsi and the NFL have also joined together to support the launch of Regional School #1, a magnet high school in South Los Angeles that is set to open for students next fall as part of the LA Unified School District. The high school is based on the nationally recognized USC Iovine and Young Academy, a program founded by Jimmy Iovine and Andre "Dr. Dre" Young, that will offer a unique educational model focused on the theme of Integrated Design, Technology, and Entrepreneurship.

In addition to philanthropic support of the project, Pepsi and the NFL will collaborate with the school, its partners and the local community to develop and deliver community inspired applied learning experiences and industry internships. "This effort will help develop and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators," Los Angeles Unified Interim Superintendent Megan K. Reilly said. "We are excited about the additional opportunities this partnership will bring to our students."

Marking the third year of this collaboration, Pepsi, the NFL and Roc Nation are excited to bring these genre defining artists together for a larger-than-life performance of hits from their deep collective catalog.

The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show telecast will be produced by DPS with Roc Nation and Jesse Collins serving as executive producers, and Hamish Hamilton serving as director. Roc Nation is also serving as the strategic entertainment advisors of the live performance.

"The opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime show, and to do it in my own backyard, will be one of the biggest thrills of my career," said Dr. Dre. "I'm grateful to JAY-Z, Roc Nation, the NFL, and Pepsi as well as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar for joining me in what will be an unforgettable cultural moment."

"On February 13, 2022, at the Super Bowl LVI in Inglewood, CA, in the new SoFi Stadium, Dr. Dre, a musical visionary from Compton, Snoop Dogg, an icon from Long Beach and Kendrick Lamar, a young musical pioneer in his own right, also from Compton, will take center field for a performance of a lifetime, said Shawn "JAY-Z" Carter. "They will be joined by the lyrical genius, Eminem and the timeless Queen, Mary J. Blige. This is the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. This is history in the making."

"This year we are blowing the roof off the concept of collaboration," said Adam Harter, Senior Vice President of Media, Sports and Entertainment at PepsiCo. "Along with the NFL and Roc Nation, we continue to try and push the limits on what fans can expect during the most exciting 12 minutes in music; this year's superstar line-up is sure to deliver a mind-blowing performance."

"Artists like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg were at the forefront of the West Coast hip hop revolution, so to be able to bring them back to LA, where it all began alongside Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar will prove to be an epic, unforgettable celebration of the impact hip hop has today," said Todd Kaplan, Pepsi Marketing VP. "The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show has become a landmark cultural moment, bringing about some of the most iconic performances over the years – from JLo and Shakira to Lady Gaga to The Weeknd – and we are thrilled to bring together such an incredible array of talented, record-breaking musicians to put on a performance for the ages."

Ole Miss at Alabama preview: When Alabama has the ball - Roll Bama Roll

Much has been made of the matchup between Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss offense and an Alabama defense that will undoubtedly make adjustments from last season’s shootout, but it may well be that the game will be decided on the other side of the ball. Alabama’s offense is still quite potent, but with eight new starters has taken an understandable and expected step back from the historically great units of the past two seasons. Meanwhile, the Ole Miss defense returned ten starters and has shown improvement from last year’s horrendous showing.

The key question is how much of that is actual improvement, and not merely a product of a forgiving early schedule.

Three games don’t provide enough data to draw any real conclusions about any team. Against Louisville in the opener, the Rebels allowed 155 rushing yards on 39 carries for a 4.0 average. The Cardinals have managed 4.1 per carry on the season, and Florida State limited them to only 3.2 per carry last weekend. The Rebels did a fantastic job limiting explosive passing plays, however, holding the Cardinals roughly 30% under their season average at only 5.26 yards per attempt.

Returns weren’t quite as good against Tulane, the only other FBS level opponent Ole Miss has faced this season. Mediocre defensive play in the first half allowed the Green Wave to hang around far more than they should have. Tulane’s first seven possessions netted touchdown drives of 33, 66 and 74 yards plus another 58 yard drive that resulted in a missed field goal. Their top two running backs combined for 87 yards on 18 totes, and while the Green Wave didn’t pass often, they managed a robust 9.2 yards per attempt when they did.

The Rebels have managed a decent pass rush thus far with nine sacks in three games, though five of those came against FCS foe Austin Peay, including two by senior DE Sam Williams who leads the team with four on the season. Williams has good size at 6’4”, 265 lb. and will be a challenge for an Alabama offensive line that has had some issues at times this season.

The Rebels have some beef up front, with a four man rotation at tackle featuring four guys who all go 290 lbs. and above, led by nose tackle Quentin Bivens. At the end opposite Williams is former three-star Cedric Johnson, a 255 lb. sophomore who drew some hype in the preseason but hasn’t shown up much on the stat sheet early on. At linebacker, Ole Miss suffered its greatest offseason loss when leading tackler Jacquez Jones transferred to Kentucky. Still, the Rebels return experience in MoMo Sanogo and Lakia Henry, both listed at 230 lb. With so many returnees, co-coordinators Chris Partridge and D.J. Durkin should have limitless stunts and blitzes to throw at the Tide, though they have seemingly preferred something of a bend-don’t-break strategy thus far.

This is particularly true in the secondary. where every effort has been made to cut down on the explosive plays that plagued the Rebels in 2020. While Alabama’s receiving corps is nowhere near the same squad without DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle, it’s hard to believe that Ole Miss will trust a rather nondescript group of cornerbacks in press coverage against John Metchie and Jameson Williams. Perhaps the greatest strength this defense has shown so far is keeping everything underneath and making sure tackles after the catch. Senior 215 lb. nickel back Otis Reese has been a leader in this area, along with safeties Jake Springer and A.J. Finley. They haven’t been great ball hawks, however, as the whole team has managed only one interception on the season.

While nothing will be surprising given head coach Lane Kiffin’s unspoken desire to be the first former Nick Saban assistant to beat him, don’t expect Ole Miss to get too exotic between the 20s. The Rebels will try to continue their early season strategy of forcing the offense to stay patient and execute long drives, hoping to bow up in the red zone. Alabama was able to do this against Florida with scoring drives of 6, 7, 8, 13, and 14 plays.

With the Rebels looking to play fastball on offense, keeping the ball away from Matt Corral and company may be just what the doctor ordered. Alabama RB Brian Robinson has shown himself adept at moving piles and QB Bryce Young has moved the chains early in the season. Finishing in the red zone will be paramount in this scenario, and thus far that has been a strength for the Tide as well.

We will know much more about both of these teams on Saturday evening. It’s going to be a fun one.

Roll Tide.

The Kenyan-born painter Wangari Mathenge, whose vivid figurative works offer intimate portraits of the diasporic experience, is having her first U.K. solo exhibition at London’s Pippy Houldsworth Gallery. The show brings together two series bridging past and present: “The Expats,” based on photographs from Mathenge’s childhood after her father relocated the family to London in the ’70s, and “The Ascendants,” depicting domestic scenes from the artist’s present-day life in Chicago. Remaking the family photos in “The Expats,” Mathenge says, helped her “connect with my parents more and better understand colonial Kenya.” She was also interested in the racial and class implications of the terms “expat” and “immigrant.” In “The Ascendants,” she explores the idea of home in the absence of one’s homeland. The delicately balanced compositions feature contemplative figures alongside personal items containing layers of associations — a statuette of a Masai elder, say, or a teddy bear wearing a scarf. For Mathenge, the moments she renders are microcosms: “It’s within a moment in time that you understand a culture, because that culture is just made for that person in that setting.” “You Are Here” will be on view from Oct. 12 through Nov. 13, houldsworth.co.uk.

In 2018, Parsons grads Dylan Cao, Jin Kay and Huy Luong founded Commission, a women’s wear label specializing in business-casual staples with contemporary flourishes like graphic prints and lace and fringe trim. Now, after requests from customers and retailers alike, they’re launching a men’s line, the governing principle of which is that, as Cao puts it, “we would never offer a piece we wouldn’t wear ourselves.” The designers were inspired by the loucher side of the ’70s, and the resulting collection is rife with darkly sensual undertones. Though the relaxed suiting and striped knit polos feel lifted from 1975, luxe updates emerge upon closer inspection: What appear to be high-pile mohair pullovers are in fact pure cashmere; jacket lapels are notched low; and coat collars come extended on one side with a flap that buttons. In the summer of 1962, having recently divorced at the age of 30, Joan Archibald left her two young children with her mother in Long Island and set out for the shores of Malibu, California. (“My mom needed to expand herself,” Archibald’s daughter Susan explained many years later.) There she shed her former life as a housewife, rebaptizing herself “Kali,” brushing shoulders with celebrities and photographing the scene around her. After moving into a house in Palm Springs with a pool, she began using it as a giant finishing bath for her photos, pouring various dyes and paints into it until she’d achieved the desired effects. Flooded with swirling, multilayered psychedelic hues, Kali’s portraits, often of wide-eyed young women, can feel like the ultimate distillation of an expansive, naïve and chaotic place and time. Fairphone’s latest sustainable smartphone comes with a five-year warranty - The Verge

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

Fairphone, the manufacturer focused on making easy to repair smartphones made out of ethically sourced materials, just took the wraps off its fourth-generation handset. The Fairphone 4 uses a modular design that’s similar to the company’s previous phones, only now with more powerful internals, a five-year warranty, and a promise of two major Android updates and software support until the end of 2025. Prices start at €579 / £499 for the phone, which will ship on October 25th.

I’ve been using the Fairphone 4 for a couple of days as my primary phone, and while I’m not ready to give a final verdict just yet, it feels like a big step forward compared to the dated designs and low-power components found in the company’s previous phones. Stay tuned for my full review.

Fairphone’s ambition is to produce a more ethical alternative to modern smartphones. That means making a device that’s ethically sourced using sustainable materials before providing the software support and warranty to make it useable for as long as possible. Although Fairphone is only guaranteeing software support until the end of 2025, it has ambitions to extend this as far as 2027. In an ideal world, Fairphone would also like to eventually release 2024’s Android 15 as an update to the phone.

Normally, the specs of Fairphone’s devices are secondary to its ethical considerations, but unlike its previous phones, the Fairphone 4 is competitive with other mid-range Android handsets. The 5G handset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 750G processor, and that’s paired with either 6 or 8GB of RAM and 128 or 256GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD. It’s powered by a 3,905mAh removable battery, and the display is a 6.3-inch 1080p LCD panel.

There are two rear cameras — a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultrawide — and a single 25-megapixel selfie camera. The main rear camera is equipped with optical image stabilization and can record at up to 4K / 30fps.

A notable downside compared to previous Fairphones is that the Fairphone 4 no longer includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, a choice that feels at odds with the company’s otherwise customer-first approach. Fairphone tells me it made this decision in order to be able to offer an official IP rating for dust and water resistance, which was missing from the company’s previous phones. It’s only IP54, which means it’s protected from light splashes rather than full submersion, but that’s impressive in light of its removable rear cover and modular design.

Regarding its modularity, Fairphone is selling eight repair modules for the phone, which include replacement displays, batteries, back covers, USB-C ports, loudspeakers, earpieces, rear cameras, and selfie cameras. All of these are easily removable using a standard Philips head screwdriver, which means customers should be able to carry out a lot of repairs themselves. But, if you need to turn to a professional, Fairphone says its spare parts are readily available for local repair shops to buy and use themselves.

Fairphone’s previous two phones are the only devices to have received perfect repairability scores from iFixit, and the company tells me it believes the Fairphone 4 is even more repairable.

The hope is for these spare parts to be available until at least 2027. Fairphone has a good track record with previous devices, telling me it still has parts in stock for the six-year-old Fairphone 2, two years after the last handset was sold. But product manager Miquel Ballester concedes that the company has run out of certain parts for that model.

So too does Fairphone have a solid record on the software side of providing major Android updates for its phones… eventually. Earlier this year, the company officially released its Android 9 update for the Fairphone 2, a device that originally launched with Android 5. It may have come almost three years after Android 9’s original release, but it means that the phone continues to run an officially supported version of Google’s operating system. It bodes well for Fairphone’s support aspirations for the Fairphone 4, although it will have to contend with the fact that Qualcomm only officially supports its chipsets for three major OS updates and four years of security updates, Ars Technica reports.

In terms of materials, the Fairphone 4 is made using Fairtrade-certified gold; responsibly sourced aluminum and tungsten; and recycled tin, rare earth minerals, and plastic (including its rear panel, which is 100 percent recycled polycarbonate). The company has various initiatives to improve the working conditions of miners and factory workers involved in the supply chains for its devices. Fairphone also claims that the Fairphone 4 is the “first electronic waste neutral handset” because it’ll recycle one phone or an equal amount of e-waste for each device sold.

The Fairphone 4 is available to preorder today in Europe and should ship starting October 25th. The model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage costs €579 / £499, while the step-up model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage retails for €649 / £569. Unfortunately, there’s no sign of a US release: Fairphone says it’s interested but that it’s focusing on Europe for the time being.

Boxers Fall to Bruins in Five Sets - Pacific University Athletics

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com
FOREST GROVE, Ore.- The Pacific University Volleyball team went the distance with George Fox, but the visitors prevailed in the fifth and final set to steal the victory on the road (26-28, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 13-15).

George Fox held the advantage in kills with 64 on the night while the Boxers would tally 57. The hosts hit .117 as a team and their 33 errors would prove to be costly.

Mara Murphy (Freshman/Salt Lake City, UT), Elika Unti (Senior/Castro Valley, CA), and Carissa Ramirez (Senior/Hillsboro, OR) each posted double-digit kills in the match. Haley Walz (Senior/Tucson, AZ) led the way defensively with 31 digs on the night.

Setter Shaianne Cambra (Junior/Kapolei, HI) notched her fourth consecutive double-double with 46 assists and 19 digs in the contest. Claire Stipsits (Sophomore/Ontario, Canada) chipped in with nine kills and eight digs while Chloe Elmore (Senior/Salem, OR) added five kills with eight digs.

The Pacific middle blockers were dominant with 16 blocks in the five-set contest. Unti and Elmore recorded five blocks apiece to lead the way.

How It Happened

Pacific (4-7, 2-3 NWC) struggled in the opening set but rallied to take set two. George Fox (7-4, 2-3 NWC) used a 7-0 run in the middle of set three to restore their lead, but the Boxers battled from eight points down to win the fourth set and force a decisive fifth. Pacific held a 13-11 lead in the final set, but the Bruins answered with a 4-0 run to close out the match.

In the first set, the two teams would trade points nearly the whole way. Neither side held more than a three-point advantage but the Bruins would rally to take the set 28-26.

The Boxers came out firing in set two as they started on a 5-0 run to take an early lead. Another 5-1 swing in the middle of the set gave the hosts a 16-10 advantage, but George Fox rallied to even the score at 16-16 and force a Pacific timeout. Head Coach Kip Yoshimura made the most of his timeout and his team would rattle off three straight points to regain the lead and eventually take the set 25-21.

Set three was another back-and-forth battle but the visitors did just enough to earn the 25-22 set victory.

The Bruins looked to be cruising towards a comfortable four-set win after starting the set with a 12-4 advantage, but the Boxers fought their way back into the match with an 11-3 run. Pacific ended the set with a 5-0 run to force a fifth set.

Both teams would trade points in the fifth set, but the Boxers held a 13-11 advantage in the final frame. However, it would be George Fox to deliver the final blow, a 4-0 run to earn the 15-13 set victory.

Up Next

The Boxers return to the Stoller Center on Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. when they host Linfield.

Carlos Rodon pitches five scoreless innings in last start of regular season - Chicago Sun-Times

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

Left-hander Carlos Rodon’s much-anticipated start, his first in nine days and only his sixth in the last two months of the season, finally unfolded Wednesday at Guaranteed Rate Field.

It wasn’t overpowering, but it was effective.

“I didn’t have my best stuff but went out there and got outs and gave my team a chance to win,” Rodon said after pitching five scoreless innings of one-hit ball in the White Sox’ 6-1 victory against the Reds. “Didn’t have that overpowering fastball but had some secondary stuff and got weak contact.”

It was something of a test run looking ahead to the postseason for the All-Star who has pitched through fatigue and soreness in recent weeks as his innings workload reached a level not seen since 2018. There are playoff plans to be made and pitching rotations to be mapped out for an anticipated best-of-five American League Division Series.

“He found a way to get hitters out; the big key is how he feels physically [Thursday] so he can get closer to where he was velocity-wise, so just reserve judgment,” manager Tony La Russa said.

Rodon, who got outs without resurrecting the mid-to-upper-90s velocity that carried him to Cy Young-contender status during the first half of the season, was mostly in the 90-91 mph range with his four-seam fastball, four to five mph below his average for most of the season. That still gives cause for some concern, but there were no qualms with the results. Rodon got nine flyouts and only one groundout, struck out four and walked two. He threw an economical 69 pitches, 43 for strikes, and got eight swinging strikes.

“I’m not too concerned,” he said. “I got 15 outs and gave up one hit. Some days I’m not going to have it all.”

Michael Kopech followed with three scoreless innings, leaving Rodon with a 13-5 record, 2.37 ERA and 185 strikeouts in the best season of his career. Rodon made 24 starts, threw 132⅔ innings and had five starts of five-plus innings with one or no hits allowed, the most in AL history. And while he hasn’t pitched more than five innings in his last eight starts, Rodon went 5-0 with a 1.92 ERA over his last six.

“To put it in perspective, I threw 11 innings last year, this year I threw 132,” Rodon said. “That’s a lot on a body, but I’m not going to use that as an excuse. I’m going to go out there and try to win for my team.”

Rodon, who rested his shoulder on the injured list in mid-August and was given extra days of rest throughout the season, lasted only three innings in his previous start against the Tigers on Sept. 20. The picture of him hanging his head in the dugout was anything but encouraging, and La Russa expressed concern about the discomfort he was dealing with.

If and when Rodon gets a chance to face the Astros and how deep into a game he could pitch in the AL Division Series that starts next Thursday is something La Russa, his staff and general manager Rick Hahn will discuss in the coming days.

After the day off Thursday, the Sox (91-68) have three games left against the Tigers. Lance Lynn will pitch Friday, followed by Lucas Giolito on Saturday and Dylan Cease on Sunday. That would allow Lynn and Giolito to pitch Games 1 and 2 of the ALDS against Houston on five days of rest, although the order hasn’t been set. Perhaps one scenario would be Rodon starting Game 3 with Kopech close behind. Another would be starting Cease.

Gavin Sheets hit his 11th home run against Reds right-hander Sonny Gray and drove in another run with a single, and Tim Anderson hit his 17th homer of the season.

The Sox are 1œ games behind the Astros, who have four games left and hold the tiebreaker.

What’s Going On With The NBA’s Lonzo Ball Tampering Case? - Forbes

The Chicago Bulls struck right away at the start of 2021 free agency, coming to terms with Lonzo Ball on a four-year, $80 million sign-and-trade deal within the opening minute. The Bulls had been trying to acquire Ball going back to the 2020-21 trade deadline, and all signs had pointed to them getting their man in free agency.

Because of how quickly the deal involving Ball and the New Orleans Pelicans came together, the NBA launched a tampering investigation. Kyle Lowry’s sign-and-trade deal with the Miami Heat also got caught up in an investigation.

That was nearly two months ago at this point, and the investigation is ongoing as training camp begins. Last year’s tampering investigation into the Milwaukee Bucks for the botched Bogdan Bogdanovic trade talks took about a month before the punishment was doled out. The Bucks were docked a 2022 second-round pick, with the failure to wind up with Bogdanovic playing a role in the decision.

The Bulls aren’t going to lose out on Ball, so there’s some speculation that the punishment could be worse, assuming there is punishment. Cody Westerlund of 670 The Score says “there’s a belief in some NBA circles that the Bulls could be docked a first-round draft pick.”

Chicago is out two first-round picks from the Nikola Vucevic trade and another one from the DeMar DeRozan sign-and-trade, but one came back in the Lauri Markkanen sign-and-trade. Perhaps that pick (2022 lottery protected first from the Portland Trail Blazers) will be taken away from them, but that still remains to be seen. It would obviously be ideal to not lose that pick and be able to use it as a trade chip.

Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas was asked about the investigation at Media Day on Monday, but, as expected, he declined to address it. Karnisovas did address why the Bulls targeted Ball, citing his ability to play fast, handle the ball as a primary or secondary option, defend, shoot the 3 at a high level and rebound. Karnisovas also noted how he was “pleasantly surprised” that so many players were interested in coming to Chicago to play with two All-Stars, with Ball at the front of the line.

The 23-year-old is coming off a career season with the Pelicans in which he averaged 14.6 points, 5.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 37.8% from 3-point range on 8.3 attempts per game. What’s interesting, though, is Ball played more of a 3-and-D role as opposed to a point guard role. Ball hinted at playing more of a “traditional point guard role” with the Bulls, referencing conversations he has had with head coach Billy Donovan.

“Just getting back to being more of a traditional point guard where I'm comfortable at,” Ball said, per NBC Sports Chicago’s Rob Schaefer. “Last year was different for me, but whatever coach asks me, I'm going to do to the best of my abilities. This year, it's looking like I'm going to be playing point guard a lot, so that's what I'm trying to do.”

Chicago has been seeking a legitimate upgrade at point guard for years. The Coby White experiment didn’t go well last season, and Tomas Satoransky (went to the Pelicans for Ball) proved to be a quality depth piece rather than a quality starter at the position. Ball has his own flaws as a half-court initiator and scorer, but he’ll bring high-level passing and a high basketball IQ to the position along with his improved 3-point shot. The guard will be looking to push the pace as much as possible to get the Bulls easy points.

It’s fair to wonder just how much Ball will, or even should, control the ball with LaVine and DeRozan around, but Chicago will ideally build a diverse offense that features plenty of ball and player movement. While LaVine is the top dog, having other options to initiate offense will make them more dangerous. As good as LaVine was last season, he still had to carry too much of a load and didn’t get enough help, resulting in too many late-game failures.

However Ball is used, the Bulls are banking on him playing a key role in helping them get back to the playoffs. At just 23 years old, he also still has room to grow as Chicago tries to return to contender status over the coming years. The Bulls are hoping this partnership will be worth whatever they may be docked in the tampering investigation.
