DAYTON, Ohio – DePaul women's volleyball fell 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 20-25) to undefeated Ball State on Saturday morning at the Tru By Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational.
Despite 13 ties and three lead changes between the squads, DePaul (3-2) could not quite claw back and overcome a number of miscues and the Ball State (6-0) potent attack.
Sophomore Jill Pressly led the Blue Demons attack once again with 12 kills to go along with 11 digs and a block. Emma Price put down eight kills including five in the first set while Donna Brown totaled seven kills and three blocks.
In the back row, sophomore libero Rachel Krasowski collected a match-high 26 digs while freshman Avery Horejsi picked up nine digs.
Ball State was led by Jaclyn Buhlman and Natalie Mitchem with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Kate Vinson totlaed 16 digs for the Cardinals.
Set One: After Ball State jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, the Blue Demons strung together a 4-0 run to tie the set behind a kill apiece from Brown, Price, Pressly and Karl. The Cardinals responded and retook the lead at 12-8 to force a Blue Demons timeout. Price put down her fifth kill of the first set to come within one at 14-13. Coach Zidek called a timeout with the Blue Demons trailing 17-14 before DePaul won three of the next four points to cut the deficit to two and force a Ball State timeout. DePaul knotted the score at 20 apiece before the Cardinals rattled off four consecutive points and eventually claimed set one, 25-22.
Set Two: The second set was a back-and-forth affair early on until a 4-0 run gave the Blue Demons an 11-9 advantage. Ball State went on a 9-2 run to expand their lead to 20-13 before the Blue Demons won four of the next six points to come within five and force a Cardinals timeout. After the break, Ball State closed out the set on a 3-0 run to take a 2-0 match lead.
Set Three: Ball State opened the third set on a 7-1 run and led by as many as 12 at 19-7. The Blue Demons battled back into the set with the help of a 7-1 run of their own and drew as close as five at 22-17 before the Cardinals claimed the match with a 25-20 set three victory.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "Lots of good lessons to take out of this match. First, this group learned that their standard of play to start the match cannot be complacent so much so as it puts us far away from our high end game. I think this comes with experience and sometimes you have to lose matches like this in order to learn that lesson. What Kelli Miller Phillips has done since taking over that program is get them back to levels of success they saw in the 2000s where they were winning conference championships alongside Ohio in the MAC. Ball State did this well. Their start of games is not far away from their end game and they played very smart and low error volleyball. Second, we learned the importance of having depth on our roster and in that depth non-starters are going to be in important roles for us in providing a spark when our starters are struggling. Molly, Meredith, and Ally Dennemann all came in and provided veteran leadership and performances that allowed the group to take a collective breath. Volleyball is best of 5 sets not best of one, so there's always an opportunity to work yourself back into the match if you have a slow start and these game changing role positions are what's going to make us the ultimate team down the stretch. Lastly, I was proud that we fought until the end point. We worked ourselves back into that 2nd and 3rd set and created opportunities to extend the match. Next time, we will execute those opportunities better. What a wonderful opportunity tonight will be to rip the band-aid off and compete again. You don't have to spend an entire weekend thinking about this match, we get a chance right away to bounce back."
