Five players from three schools received Big 12 football week four awards. Texas has two first-time honorees in Casey Thompson (offensive) and Xavier Worthy (newcomer). Oklahoma State’s Malcolm Rodriguez (co-defensive) was recognized for the second time this season and fourth occasion in his career. Baylor’s Trestan Ebner (special teams) picked up his second career award while Garmon Randolph (co-defensive) was honored for the first time.
Thompson completed 18-of-23 passes and established career-highs with 303 passing yards and five passing touchdowns to lead Texas to a 70-point game for the first time since 2005. The five passing touchdowns are tied for second-most in a single game in UT history. He carried the ball seven times for 29 yards and a touchdown to give him six touchdowns responsible for, which is also tied for second in program records. With Texas' touchdown to close out the first half against Texas Tech, Thompson had led the Longhorns on 11 consecutive touchdown drives. Since entering at halftime of last season's Valero Alamo Bowl, the junior has guided Texas to a score when he is the QB on 24 of 27 drives.
Randolph collected his first career interception to go along with six tackles, including one for loss in Baylor’s 31-29 win over No. 14 Iowa State. With the Cyclones trailing by just five and driving in the fourth quarter, Randolph secured the interception at the BU 18-yard line to flip the field and thwart ISU’s attempt at a go-ahead touchdown. Randolph was an integral part of Baylor’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2015.
Rodriguez recovered a fumble and scored a touchdown in the first quarter of OSU's 31-20 win over No. 25 Kansas State. He finished with seven tackles to mark his ninth consecutive game with at least seven. He has led the OSU defense in solo stops every game this season, including his six against K-State. The senior LB was also credited with a tackle for loss and a pair of quarterback hurries.
Ebner contributed to Baylor’s win over ISU with 168 return yards. His day was highlighted by a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter that helped BU wrestle momentum back from the Cyclones in a back-and-forth contest. In total, Ebner racked up 121 yards on three kickoff returns and 47 more return yards on a pair of punt returns, including a 41-yarder late in the fourth quarter. It set up a 34-yard field goal that proved to be the difference in the 31-29 win.
True freshman Worthy posted five receptions for 100 yards and three touchdowns against Texas Tech. His three touchdown catches are a UT freshman single-game record and gave him four for the season, which is already third-most by a rookie in program annals. His 100-yard receiving game is the 17th in school history by the 13th different freshman. Worthy’s 62-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter was the 18th-longest by a freshman.
