Box Score 1 INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The Chattanooga Mocs' indoor volleyball team faced two five-set matches on the final day of the Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by IUPUI. In the first match of Saturday, UTC and Toledo battled and the Rockets took the five-set match, 3-2. In the last match of the tournament for the two teams, the Mocs defeated the WIU Leathernecks 15-9 in the final frame to take the match.

Toledo started the first set strong, holding multiple seven-point leads. Down 18-11, UTC went on a 6-1 run to come within three of the Rockets. Toledo battled back and a kill from Jada Bouyer gave them four set points, up 24-19. The Mocs were not done. UTC used kill after kill and took advantage of two Toledo attacking errors to tie the match at 24. With Sophia Bossong behind the service line for the fifth time in a row, the Mocs took their first lead since being up 4-3. UTC took the set off the second consecutive attacking error from Toledo's Taylor Alt to cap off the 7-0 run.
Toledo was hitting above .200 throughout the majority of the set but ended the frame hitting .089 compared to Chattanooga's .171.
The second set consisted of an early 7-4 Chattanooga lead before the Rockets turned things around. Toledo tied the set at seven before exchanging points with UTC and taking a 15-13 lead into the media timeout. Toledo's run continued after the stoppage with a 4-1 swing to hold a 19-14 advantage.
UTC couldn't cut its deficit within five points as Toledo evened the match.
UTC led the third set from the start and never gave up the lead. Beginning with a 7-2 advantage, the Mocs held significant cushion throughout the frame. Neither offense was dominant in the set, both hitting under .200, but the Mocs capitalized on 12 Toledo attacking errors and three service errors to take the set.
The fourth set was the most competitive of them all, featuring 18 ties and 10 lead changes with both teams hitting above .225. The fourth was the definition of back and forth as netiher team held more than two-point lead until the end. With the set tied at 22 after a Rackel Kill, the Rockets regained the lead, and UTC called a timeout. Toledo used back-to-back kills to take the set and force a fifth frame. The last nine points of the set were won by kills. The competitive fourth set featured just nine combined attacking errors, four service errors and one setting error. The two teams totaled 32 kills and six blocks (five UTC blocks).
Toledo took its momentum into the fifth set winning the first four points. After a UTC timeout, the Mocs battled back but still faced a five-point deficit down 10-5. The Rockets won five of the next eight points to take the match.
Notes
- Baez-Carlo's 10 block assists are the most since Rachel Evans completed a triple-double, which included 10 block assists vs. Appalachian State on Oct. 4, 1998. Her 11 blocks marked the most by a Moc since Kelley Smith had 14 on Oct. 25, 2003. The freshman middle blocker added seven kills on 13 swings, hitting .385, which led the team.
- Rackel continued her dominance offensively, leading the match with 19 kills.
- Coniah Davis (9), Lauren Baker (7) and Kate Neill (6) combined for 20 of the team's 51 kills. All three recorded three blocks defensively.
- In the back row, Paige Gallentine posted a match-high 33 digs. Bossong was second on the team with 10 and completed another double-double with a match-best 45 assists. Gallentine's 33 digs is a season-best for a Moc and the first time a UTC player had more than 30 since Brenna Everingham tallied 34 vs. Samford (March 22, 2021).

Both teams entered the match coming off five-set losses, Western Illinois's coming just an hour prior. The first set opened with the Mocs holding a small 3-1 lead. The Leathernecks powered back quickly, going on a run to take a 6-3 advantage. Rackel did what she does best – dominating the first set. The Mocs' sophomore attacker recorded three kills in five points as UTC regained its advantage. She wasn't done.
After a Neill kill, Rackel used three kills, a WIU error and a block to go on a 6-0 run by herself to give UTC a 14-10 lead. After Bossong's first kill of the match brought the contest to a media timeout with the Mocs up 15-10, Rackel added another kill to her total. The Leathernecks batted back, bringing the set within reach at 20-18, but Finch slotted her third kill of the contest to put the Mocs up three. UTC ended the first set on a 5-0 run, capped off by an ace from Makenzie Jordan to end it. The Mocs hit .326 in the frame and held the Leathernecks to a .080 clip.
The second set was extremely close, featuring five ties prior to the media timeout. Rackel's 12th kill of the contest gave the Mocs a 15-13 lead at the break. The Mocs were up 17-15, but a 5-1 run by WIU gave them a two-point lead, forcing the Mocs to call timeout. With the set tied at 23, the Leathernecks won the next two points to even the match at one set apiece. The tight second set featured 12 ties and four lead changes.
After a back and forth in the beginning, the Leathernecks took a 14-10 lead and didn't look back. WIU hit. 500 in the set and closed the frame on a 11-0 run to take a 2-1 lead.
The Blue and Gold dominated early in the fourth, ready to send the match to a fifth set. UTC began the set on an 8-1 run, forcing the Leathernecks to call timeout. The fourth-set offense didn't stop there. The Mocs were the first to 20 in the set, taking a 20-11 lead off a WIU error. WIU battled back and got within striking distance but could not take the lead. UTC forced a fifth set with a 25-21 win in the fourth.
The Leathernecks took a quick 1-0 lead in the fifth, but the Mocs raddled off five straight points to force a WIU timeout. The Blue and Gold took an 11-4 lead, and the Leathernecks called their final timeout. WIU got within five, but could not come any closer as the two teams exchanged points the rest of the way. Bossong closed the door with her sixth kill of the match to give UTC its first five-set victory of the season.
Notes
- Rackel's 25 kills tie a match high for the junior. She previously posted 25 at Furman on Nov. 8, 2019. The match is the first time in her career she's hit above .400 with more than 10 kills. Defensively, she added five blocks, one solo.
- The block party for Baez-Carlo didn't stop in the morning match. The middle kept going, this time posting six block assists and a solo block. The seven blocks were tied for a match high.
- Bossong was back to her offensive ways with six kills. Her second double-double of the day consisted of 49 assists and 12 digs.
- In the back row, Jordan posted double-digit digs for the first time this season. She recorded 13 digs, the second most on the squad. Gallentine led the match once again, this time with 25.
- The Mocs had four players with 10+ digs for the first time since March 21 vs. Samford. Liz Tomlin capped off the effort with 10 herself.
- Chandler Alter joined the freshman success with nine kills, the second most on the squad. Davis and Neill added seven apiece, while Finch closed out the team's 65 kills.
- UTC's 65 kills are the most since the squad posted 74 vs. Georgia State in the five-set thriller on Sept. 12, 2021.
- Both teams had 186 attempts with UTC outhitting WIU .215-.188.

The Mocs head back to Chattanooga next weekend and will host Tennessee Tech, Virginia Tech and Troy in the annual Chattanooga Classic. The Mocs begin the action vs. TTU at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10.
