EAST LONGMEADOW — A suffocating defense and an electric offense makes for an unstoppable football team, and unstoppable is exactly what East Longmeadow was Friday night.
The Spartans won convincingly in their matchup against Taconic in 2019 and not much changed in Week 1 of the 2021 season as No. 16 East Longmeadow went on to win 42-6.
East Longmeadow did not waste time getting started on offense. Within four minutes of the game Conner Robidoux took the ball from 15 yards out and ran it in for the Spartans’ first touchdown.
East Longmeadow tacked on two more before halftime; one coming from Preston Longo and the other coming from Johnny Ferrentino.
Ferrentino put on a standout performance in all aspects of the game. On offense he finished with two receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns. He showed up defensively with a handful of tackles and an interception. Meanwhile, on special teams he had a monster return and didn’t miss a single extra point kick.
Unfortunately for Taconic, nothing changed in the second half. The Spartans’ swarming defense did not let the opposing offense breath.
The Spartan defense allowed 142 passing yards and 36 rushing yards. The Spartans also forced three turnovers on the night.
Shane Becker dominated the third quarter for the Spartans, throwing for two touchdowns and running one in from 24 yards out.
Becker finished the night with five touchdowns, 85 passing yards and 46 rushing yards.
“He did well tonight, but his mind is already focused on South Hadley and where we’re going next,” East Longmeadow coach Mike Morrisino said.
Taconic managed to put up a touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 64 yard throw to Sean Harrigan. He finished the night with 127 yards on four catches.
The Spartans ran their way to the victory finishing with 149 yards on the ground. Their leading backs were Longo and Dominick Gamelli.
After going 1-4 in the Fall II season, Morrisino said the team was shifting.
“Wins and losses are great, but we want our kids doing the right thing and we’re seeing that and I think tonight was a product of that. If we believe in that culture truly and stay with it then things will keep going on the up for East Longmeadow Football,” coach Morrisino said.
Next Friday night the Spartans will be visiting South Hadley and Taconic will be looking to get their first win against Hoosac Valley.
