Oregon Tallies Five Interceptions in Win Over Arizona, Ducks 41 - Wildcats 19 - Addicted to Quack

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

After missing the second half of last week’s contest against Stony Brook, starting quarterback Anthony Brown Jr. returned to the field this Saturday and put in another gutsy performance, as it was clear that he was playing through some pain.

The Ducks got off to a great start by scoring on a 63-yard touchdown pass to Jaylon Redd on their first drive and then picking off quarterback Jordan McCloud on Arizona’s first play of the game. Safety Bennett Williams was the Duck to collect the first pick - his first of two interceptions on the night - and the Oregon offense rewarded his effort by setting up a 21-yard field goal for Camden Lewis to give the home team the early two-score lead.

But the Wildcats put together an impressive 10-play, 91-yard drive that ended with a McCloud touchdown pass to Bryce Wolma. Oregon responded by flying down the field, 75 yards in under two minute, and adding an 11-yard CJ Verdell touchdown to the Duck lead.

Arizona put together another long drive following the Oregon score, but Mykael Wright picked off McCloud in the end zone to deflate their momentum. The Ducks then took just eight plays to travel 80 yards and get Terrance Ferguson in the end zone with a 9-yard TD catch, but to the Wildcats’ credit they were able to make it a two-score game at the half with a field goal.

Arizona continued their upset bid by marching to the Oregon red zone once again coming out of halftime, but Mykael Wright killed the drive with another Duck interception. Unfortunately, the pick left the Oregon offense in a bad spot, and a collapsed pocket resulted in a safety.

The Wildcats made a lot of Duck fans nervous when they cut the lead to five at the end of the third with a Drake Anderson touchdown run, but Oregon ended the night with two unanswered scores to seal the win: an 18-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Webb and a 68-yard pick six from Bennett.

Star player Kayvon Thibodeaux saw very limited snaps in the first half, then appeared to leave the game in pain. Mase Funa, Keith Brown, and Adrian Jackson returned to the field this week and were a welcome sight. Oregon takes on Stanford this Saturday at 12:30 PM on ABC.

  • Stanley Berryhill III earned another first down for the Wildcats with a 7-yard run on second-and-5.
  • McCloud kept the ball and picked up 16 yards with his legs to reach the Oregon red zone.

  • The second quarter began the same way the first quarter ended: a 5-yard carry from Wiley. This one good for a first down.
  • After a 1-yard loss on a sweep from Berryhill, McCloud threw to the end zone and was picked off by Mykael Wright, who made a very athletic catch and foot plant to stay inbounds.

Ducks 24 - Wildcats 10

  • Brown Jr. was sacked by Kenny Herbert for a 3-yard loss on second down, then nearly threw a pick on third down on an attempted pass to Ferguson.
  • The Ducks went three-and-out and were forced to kick the first punt of the contest.
  • Passes of 11 and 7 yards to BJ Casteel and Jalen John gave the Wildcats some early momentum on their next drive.
  • But the Wildcats were unable to continue the drive and were forced to punt after a run for a loss, an incomplete pass, and a delay of game killed any potential momentum.
  • Despite clearly being a little banged up, Brown Jr. returned to the field and threw an incompletion on first down.
  • A false start set up a third-and-12 for the Ducks, which Brown converted on with a 29-yard pass to Kris Hutson. Unfortunately, Hutson was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which put them back to the Wildcat 37.
  • Brown Jr. threw two deep incompletions to end the half.

  • Oregon was deep in their own territory and gained 3 yards on a run from Verdell, but on second down the running back was taken down for a loss of a yard.
  • On third down, Brown Jr. was sacked by Mo Diallo, resulting in a safety.

Ducks 24 - Wildcats 12

(3 plays, -2 yards, 1:18)

  • Three consecutive runs from the Wildcats netted 11 yards and another first down.
  • A pass interference called on Wright put Arizona at the Oregon 22-yard line.
  • Anderson picked up 10 yards on second down to reach the Duck 12.
