STATE COLLEGE — Football and fans are back in Happy Valley.
No. 11 Penn State hosts reigning MAC champion Ball State at Beaver Stadium on Saturday in the program’s home opener. For the first time since November 2019, fans will be in the stands, and Penn State is expecting close to a capacity crowd of 107,000. Nittany Lions players and coaches are expecting a big-time atmosphere for the non-conference matchup.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised on FS1.

Second quarter, 11:22 | Penn State 17, Ball State 3
The Ball State offense finally put a drive together with some timely passing by quarterback Drew Plitt. The Cardinals went 69 yards over 15 plays in about six-and-a-half minutes, but the Nittany Lions held firm in the red zone, and Ball State settled for a 24-yard field goal by Jake Chanove to get on the board.
Penn State, though, had an answer. Parker Washington made a nice one-handed catch over the middle on a third down to move the chains, and then Sean Clifford threw a dart to Jahan Dotson on the left side for 15 yards. The Nittany Lions, though, stalled out just outside the Ball State red zone with three incompletions by Clifford. Jordan Stout came on and drilled the 45-yard field goal to make it 17-3.

The Penn State offense is humming. The Nittany Lions went up two touchdowns on Ball State after an eight-play, 76-yard drive that ended in a quarterback sneak by quarterback Sean Clifford from the goal line. Clifford dropped a couple dimes to set it up, including a 23-yard pass to Parker Washington over the middle off play-action and a 25-yarder to running back Keyvone Lee up the right side to get the Nittany Lions inside the Cardinals 10.
Mike Yurcich’s offense is fun to watch.
First quarter, 10:01 | Penn State 7, Ball State 0
Well, there appears to be a bit of a difference between the Wisconsin defense and the Ball State defense. One week after the Penn State offense struggled to do much of anything against the Badgers — one of the toughest units in the nation — the Nittany Lions looked completely different against a MAC squad.
Penn State got its first touchdown on a 5-yard run through the left side by running back Noah Cain to cap a 13-play, 78-yard drive. Cain carried five times for 23 yards and caught a 15-yard pass in the left flat where he made a man miss. Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich’s unit was moving quickly, and quarterback Sean Clifford opened 4 of 4 for 35 yards.
Ball State got the ball first with quarterback Drew Plitt throwing three incompletions to start the game.

Penn State enters the game after a 16-10 win on the road at then-No. 12 Wisconsin to open the 2021 season. The Nittany Lions offense under first-year coordinator Mike Yurcich struggled for the first half of the game, but the defense showed up in a big way to keep the game close. Then, in the second half, the offense began to hit its stride.
Ball State, meanwhile, enters the game after a 31-21 win over Western Illinois in its season opener. Wide receiver Justin Hall is the Cardinals’ big-time playmaker, and he had eight catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns a week ago.
The weather in State College is beautiful, and it should be a big-time atmosphere at Beaver Stadium.
