Second-Round Resurgence Vaults Lancers into Top Five at Wildcat Invite
Men's Golf /
VILLANOVA, Pa. – The season is still young, but Longwood men's golf is quickly developing a reputation as a team that knows how to respond.
In their latest bounce-back effort, the Lancers shaved 16 strokes off their first-round performance on the opening day of the Wildcat Invitational to finish with a 300-284—584 (+24) and in sole possession of fifth place at the 10-team tournament at Radnor Valley Country Club.
Every Longwood golfer turned in a second round score lower than their first, with freshman Scott Jordan making the biggest surge to climb into a tie for 11th place with a 75-70—145 (+5). He was one of only 10 golfers in the 45-player field to card a round at par below on day one at the par-70, 6,572-yard course.
"After what I can only describe as a 'rough round' in the morning, I'm very happy with the way we bounced back this afternoon," said Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman. "Outside of just poor play and getting the ball into spots we focused on staying away from, it's difficult to pinpoint what happened early on. Actually, our entire pairing, Georgetown and St. Joe's included, struggled this morning, so it could be we all just kind of fed off each other in a sluggish way.
"We definitely showed the fight that we expect from ourselves this afternoon. I've told our guys many times that we're going to beat people when we have all five players hanging in to the very end. Fortunately, we were able to do that the second round. That's the exact mentality we want to take out there tomorrow."
Longwood's 284 was the third-lowest score of the second round, trailing only first-place Delaware's 276 and second-place Drexel's 279. The Lancers' 16-stroke improvement was also the second best in the field, trailing only the Villanova B squad's 18-stroke turnaround.
All five Lancers contributed to Longwood's comeback, with Nick Rakes and Payo Larrain finishing right behind Jordan in a tie for 14th with matching 75-71—146 (+6) cards that both featured a one-over second round. Those two combined for eight birdies in the second round, while Larrain also eagled the course's par-5 10th hole for his and Longwood's second eagle of the season.
Senior Brendan Dunphy, who was a runner-up in Longwood's last tournament at the Joe Feaganes Invitational, enjoyed a second-round resurgence of his own to finish 20th with a 75-73—148 (+8). Teammate Christian Michael rounded out Longwood's quintet by putting together the team's biggest second-round improvement, shaving eight strokes off his first-round score to card an 80-72—152 (+12) to tie for 30th place.
Day two of the tournament will continue with the final round Tuesday.
