MUNCIE, Ind. - - After a strong start to the year, the Ball State women's volleyball team will look to continue building early-season momentum when it travels to Dayton, Ohio, for the TRU By Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational hosted by Wright State. The Cardinals open the tournament Friday at 7 p.m. against the host Raiders.

The Cardinals opened the 2021 fall campaign with an impressive showing at last weekend's GBD Invite, earning a 4-0 record and the title of tournament champions. Ball State won 12 of the 14 sets it played and held a dominating .270 to .158 advantage from the attack line.

Key to Ball State's success was its ability to effectively share the workload, with six different players logging double-digit kills over the course of the weekend, including three with 30-or-more.

Leading the charge on offense for the Cardinals was freshman setter Megan Wielonski, one of several new faces in the lineup. Wielonski was named the GBD Invite Tournament Most Valuable Player for her spectacular work in all facets of the game.

Not only did Wielonski set the Cardinals to a .270 hitting mark, handing out 9.43 assist per set, but she also registered 21 digs, 12 kills, 10 total blocks and a team-high nine service aces.

Joining Wielonski on the all-tournament team were junior opposite Natalie Mitchem and junior middle Marie Plitt. Mitchem averaged 2.71 kills per set and hit .366, while Plitt averaged 2.14 kills per set, hit .436 and averaged 1.21 blocks per set.

Ball State's first test at this weekend's TRU By Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational will be a tough one, as it faces a talented Wright State squad which has advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons. Match time is set for 7 p.m. Friday at C.J. McLin Gymnasium.

In fact, the Raiders won their opening round match last season, topping Samford by a score of 3-0. WSU then fell to eventual national runner-up Texas in three sets.

On Saturday, the Cardinals will face two more tough opponents in DePaul (10 a.m.) and Marshall (5 p.m.).

BALL STATE VOLLEYBALL QUICK HITS:

  • Ball State's 4-0 start marks the second straight season the Cardinals have won their first four matches of the year. In the COVID-19 shortened 2020-21 spring season, the Cardinals swept Akron at home and Buffalo on the road to open the year.

  • Junior middle Marie Plitt turned in some of the best numbers in the league last weekend, currently ranking first among league attackers (with at least 25 attempts) with a .436 (30-6-55) attack percentage. In addition, her 17 total blocks (two solo and 15 assists) were tops in the conference, while her 1.21 blocks-per-set average is currently fifth.

  • Graduate transfer Jaclyn Bulmahn made her presence felt in her first weekend with the Cardinals, smashing a team-high 40 kills at the GBD Invite. She averaged 2.86 kills per set and hit .327 on the weekend, including a .538 (7-0-13) rate of success against St. Thomas. On the second day of the tournament, she smashed a season-high 14 kills versus UNI and added a match-best 13 versus North Dakota State.

  • Kate Vinson led the Ball State backcourt with a 4.00 digs per set average to help the team claim the GBD Invite title opening weekend. She registered double-digit digs in each of the four contests, while leading all players in digs in three of the four outings. She closed the tournament with a season-high 15 digs in the sweep of NDSU. Her defensive play also helped the Cardinals limit opponents to a .158 attack percentage.

  • We already know Megan Wielonski made her collegiate debut a memorable one, setting the Ball State offense to a .270 rate of success and guiding the Cardinals to the GBD Invite title. But did you know she set BSU to at least a .200 attacking percentage in each of the four matches, including a .476 mark in the sweep of St. Thomas. The effort versus the Tommies ranks as the third-best single match team performance in program history.

  • Ball State enters the TRU By Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational with a 945-620-2 (.604) all-time record in women's volleyball in its 50th season of play. With last Friday's win at Green Bay, the Cardinals also improved to 27-23 in season-opening matches.

  • Ball State is 32-16 all-time versus teams in the TRU By Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational Tournament field, including a 13-8 edge versus Wright State, a 7-4 lead versus DePaul and a 12-4 all-time mark against Marshall.
