Women's Soccer Faces Mid-American Conference Opponent Ball State On Sunday - Purdue Fort Wayne Athletics

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team travels to Muncie, Ind. for a non-league game against Ball State on Sunday Sept. 5 (1 p.m.).

Series History:  Ball State leads 14-1-1. Ball State is on a six game winning streak against the Mastodons that started in 2014 up to the last time these teams played in 2019. The Mastodons lone win against Ball State came on Aug. 30, 2013 in a 1-0 victory.

Scouting The Mastodons
The Mastodons are coming off a 5-0 loss against Iowa on Thursday, Sept. 2. The loss against the Hawkeyes snapped a four game unbeaten streak. The 'Dons sit in fourth place overall in the Horizon League standings, behind Wright State, Green Bay and Milwaukee. As a team, the 'Dons rank third in the Horizon League in saves (30), tied for fourth in fewest goals allowed (seven) and fifth in shots (67).

Samantha Castaneda is the defending Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week. This past weekend, Castaneda played 220 minutes in net. She racked up six saves, allowed one goal on the weekend, and earned a shutout against Eastern Illinois. She is ranked first in the NCAA in minutes played (500:52). The Fort Wayne native is also tied for first Horizon League in shutouts (two) and total saves (30), and fifth in save percentage (.811). In their last game against Iowa, Castaneda racked up a career high 12 saves.

One of the key reasons for the Mastodons' success so far is the impact of the freshman class. Student-athletes such as Gigi Ricciardi, Kayla ShebarMarisa Metzger and Bella Reitano have all played significant minutes to start the season.

Scouting The Cardinals
Sunday will be the home opener for Ball State at Briner Sports Complex. The Cardinals enters Sunday's game with a 1-2 record with their most recent game being a loss against Cincinnati 2-1 on Thursday, Sept. 2. The Cardinals have five players with one goal this season and two players with one assist. Alex DeRuvo has started all three games in goal for the Cardinals. She owns a 1-2 overall record, saved 11 shots and allowed eight goals (.579 save percentage).

Last season, Ball State finished the year with a 6-3-1 record and appeared in the MAC Championship game against Bowling Green.

Jason Rife enters his third season as the head coach of Ball State. He owns a 22-10-1 record overall and a 13-2-1 record at the Briner Sports Complex.

The Mastodons will be on the road in Chicago, Ill. for a non-league game against Chicago State on Friday, Sept. 10 (2 p.m.). It will be the final non-conference game of the season for the Mastodons and the final of four straight road games.
