ABERDEEN, S.D. –The No. 6-ranked Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team (13-2 Overall, 5-2 NSIC) fell in a five-set battle on Saturday at the hands of the Northern State University Wolves (10-5, 5-2) by a score of 24-26, 26-24, 26-24, 19-25, 15-11. It is the fourth consecutive match against Northern State to go all five sets.

Angela Young had 20 kills, nine digs, and three blocks to lead the offense, while Meg Schmidt contributed with 16 kills and nine digs and three blocks. Payton Hjerleid led the way defensively with 18 digs, while Alisa Bengen added a season-high 15 digs and five blocks to go along with 44 assists.

The Mustangs led 17-12 in set one before a timeout by the Wolves. Katelyn Nichols led the way early, putting up three kills before the timeout. A NSU rally would give them a 20-19 lead, but SMSU responded following a timeout of their own, marching to a 24-22 lead. A pair of NSU points would tie the score at 24-24, but a kill from Emma VanHeel and NSU attack error would be enough to give SMSU a 1-0 lead.

The second set saw eight ties before NSU was able to put a pair of points together to take a 21-19 lead and force an SMSU timeout. They would end up adding three more ties to that total, including a 24-24 score, before a pair of SMSU errors would be enough to give NSU the second set. The Wolves outhit the Mustangs .143-.045, as the Mustangs made 10 attack errors and five service errors leading to the loss.

Set three started with 4-4 score, before four straight SMSU points would give them an 8-4 lead into a timeout by NSU. The timeout would prove beneficial for the Wolves, as a 7-1 run would catapult them to a 11-9 lead. The set would even out, with ties at 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, and 24 points before a pair of NSU points would give them a 26-24 win and 2-1 lead.

Set four would begin with a 10-5 SMSU lead, and although NSU would battle throughout, the Mustangs never trailed to send the match into the fifth set. The turning point was at 19-17, when four straight SMSU points off three errors and a kill from Young would put the set out of reach. NSU would collect a pair of points to go down 23-19, but a Young kill and Hjerleid ace would close the set. SMSU would hit a game-high .237 in the set, and a game-low five errors to go to a winner-take-all set.

The Wolves would race to a 5-2 lead to begin set five before a timeout by the Mustangs. SMSU would take a point before a pair of NSU kills would give them a 7-3 lead. A pair of SMSU points would be offset by a pair of NSU points, and an 11-6 lead by the Wolves would turn to 11-8 before a NSU timeout. NSU would take over, eventually winning the set 15-11.

VanHeel would finish the game with nine kills and seven blocks, while Nichols would add nine kills and four blocks.

The loss was the first of the season against an unranked opponent for the Mustangs. They will be back in action next Friday at 6 p.m. against Minot State, and Saturday at 1 p.m. against UMary.
