Swimming Picks Up Friday Sweep at Eastern Illinois - Ball State University Athletics - BallStateSports.com

CHARLESTON, Ill. - - It was another great day for the Ball State swimming program, which tallied 22 total event wins in a sweep of Eastern Illinois Friday night at Padovan Pool.
 
The men's team earned a 161-95 victory over the Panthers to improve to 1-1 in dual action on the year. Meanwhile the women's squad tallied a 174-84 victory in its first dual competition of the season.
 
Ball State's men's squad followed a five-win performance against defending Mid-American Conference champion Miami Thursday night, with 10 more event wins in Friday's victory at Eastern Illinois.
 
The men started the meet strong with a victory in the 400 medley relay as Ethan Pheifer, Joey Garberick, Bryce Handshoe and Owen Chaye combined for a time of 3:29.43.
 
It was the first of three event wins for Garberick, Handshoe and Chaye. Garberick would go on two sweep the breaststroke events, clocking in at 58.16 in the 100 and 2:13.51 in the 200.
 
Handshoe swept the butterfly events, touching the wall in 1:56.36 in the 200 and following later with a time of 50.47 in the 100. Chaye added a sweep of the sprint freestyles, with a time of 21.38 in the 50 and 47.46 in the 100.
 
Aiden Maurer was also a two-event winner for the Cardinals, taking top honors in both backstroke events. He swam 53.64 in the 100 and 1:58.31 in the 200.
 
Rounding out Ball State's individual male winners was Ryan Short in the 1000 freestyle at 10:12.20.
 
The women's squad actually started the winning streak for the Cardinals, opening the meet with its first of 12 event victory in the 400 medley relay. The event saw Shelby Crist, Abbie McCarter, Phoebe Rensink and Hannah Jones combine for a time of 3:57.32.
 
 Three of the four would go on to win individual events, with Crist taking first in the 100 butterfly (58.31), McCarter winning the 100 breaststroke (1:06.78), and Jones claiming the top spot in the 50 freestyle (24.70).
 
Katie Walker would pick up a pair of individual wins for Ball State; winning the 200 butterfly (2:07.71) and the 500 freestyle (5:11.83).
 
Six other Cardinals finished the day with one individual win, starting with Mary Kate Phillips with a time of 10:42.05 in the 1000 freestyle. Abby Hartshorne followed by earning the top spot in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.85.
 
Lilia Newkirk touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke, at 57.77, while Alexa McDonald did the same in the 100 freestyle at 53.55.
 
Rounding out Ball State's individual event winners for the women were Jessie Fraley in the 200 backstroke (2:08.67) and Laura Wright in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.16).
 
The Ball State women's squad returns to action tomorrow morning, when it hosts Ohio for an 11 a.m. contest at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. As a reminder to fans, in keeping with updated guidance from the CDC, all Ball State spectators must wear a mask while inside any University building. This includes required masking swimming & diving events held inside the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
 
The men's team will have a couple weeks to prepare for its next meet, the IUPUI House of Champions meet held Nov. 18-20.
